Seriously. It's one of the few games that does away with the usual base-building in RTS games, and just focuses on the rest. That is part of the reason why it's among my favourite RTS games, alongside the likes of Dark Omen and Z.
The difficulty settings are also handled in a pretty clever way - by scaling up damage across the board. Everything becomes more deadly, including your own units, thereby making proper tactical decisions much more important, and victory that much more satisfying.
Now that it's reached GOG, there's really no reason not to pick it up if you haven't already, if only to sample the finest the RTT genre has to offer.
ill second this. GC is probably my all-time favorite RTS... followed closely by world in conflict and DoW2...
For those who don't know: it's the predecessor engine for Ground Control 2 and later, on World in Conflict.
True, ground control is really awesome, but I really didn't like the direction the sequel took.
As a side question, having never played World in Conflict: It's more similar to GC2 than GC1, right?
I think it's [WiC] closer to GC rather than the sequel, actually but since I now have all of them here at the same time, I might take a look and post back with some thoughts on that.
GC is one of the best games ever, a real classic.I bought it here and I tried to set up for a internetsession but didnt succeed. On my wanderings in my own comp and on the internet I discovered that GC1 nowdays has become freeware so I downloaded it for free too,the expansion isnt counted in though. For me it doesnt matter this is good culture and the money we are talking about here is not that heavy for the individual, the weight are a well earnt carriage for the creative people that get us thoose old beauties for a happy rerun...
