Hi there, I purchased GC2 from gog and to my frustration, the game won't even start on my computer(windows 7, 64bit). I don't even get a screen: it's logo briefly appears in the taskbar, then boom, gone. I tried running it in compatibility mode, and it give me this error message:

Some basic information would be welcome.
Your computer specs? Graphic card, latest drivers, etc.

Did you run the game as an administrator?
Is it installed to the default folder (Program Files)?
Do you have the latest DirectX 9 (june 2010) installed?

Gfx card:radeon hd 5970
6 gb ram

Yes, I tried running it as admin.
Yes, it is installed into the default folder(in a different disk though)
Yes, I do have the latest dx9 installed.

Firstly, did you look through these two threads? : [url=http://www.gog.com/en/forum/ground_control_series/windows_7_issue_wont_play][2]

Maybe you have similar issue, if not we'll keep looking for solution.

Thanks, dude, I have, in fact seen those other threads, and I'm sorry to say that the font solution doesn't work, and those two threads offer no other solution.

Well, it was worth a shot. BTW, do you run the game from shortcut or directly from game folder? Besides running, did you install the game as admin as well?

Exception Code: c0000005 << That is memory access violation. Meaning, the application is trying to access something that is blocked, corrupted or missing. Unfortunately, the cause could be virtually everything, from active DEP (Data Execution Prevention) to anti-virus program or even faulty RAM (highly unlikely, but still)

That is why, I'm sorry to say, you may have to try a lot of different things before finding the culprit. It may be wise to open support ticket, just in case.

Anyway, some other things to try:
close all unneeded background applications
disable av / firewall
check DEP / UAC settings
check if you have the latest drivers (GPU, sound, etc.) installed
got any additional (non-Windows) codec packs?

I know these may be generic things to try, but we have to start somewhere.
On a side note, did you get the same crash while running other applications?

Not really! I'll go try that right now! And thanks for sticking around, dude!

Nope! I have a couple of games that crashes frequently(Force unleashed), some game that crash after opening sequence(Arma2), but nothing like this yet.
For better or worse, it's giving me a slightly different error message!

Definitely for better, this is no longer generic Windows error, but the actual game message.
Edit the game shortcut properties and in the 'Target' field add -debug command at the end. (there is single space between .exe and the command).

Run the game again and you should get an error log in 'debug' subdirectory in the game folder. If you have it, post the contents here.

Thanks, dude! I should mention that while the game do crash, it doesn't always crash in the same way. Sometimes it instantly crashs back to desktop without error message. Sometimes it crashes with error message. Sometimes it's just a perpetual black screen. I only managed to get that "Boom" message once, dunno how to recreate it.

here's the stuff in the debug folder:

GC2 version 93, protocol 84, gameinfo protocol 11.
Error getting fileinformation: 2 (e:\program)
EX_App::Init(): loading profiles...
MRender error: 13
MRender error message:
EX3D::CreateEngine() failed.
failed to initialize application, click to exit

Render error would point to display / graphics issue.
What's your screen refresh rate? I'm checking some older GC2 forums and it seems the game only supports 60 & 85 mhz.

A graphic issue? Darn it. Was afraid it would come to this. Long story short, my computer was purchased from abroad and since that has undergone some major repairs, and although I'm not sure about the details, I think the replacement part is somehow incompatible with the old parts, causing weird video problems. I'm running on 10.7 version of ATI Catalyst because any other version would cause my computer to suddenly shut down and reboot whenever there's a lot of stuff going on on screen in newer games. And for some reason, the 10.7 catalyst only recognizes and uses 1 out of 2 gpu cores. What I am trying to say is that this is a problem that is not likely to got solved anytime soon, so I think I'll just try and play GC2 on my laptop which I'm sure has no such problems.

Anyway thank's for your time, dude! You're the man! I'm incredibly grateful for your meticulous help!

Sorry to hear that, but from that description you definitely have some major GPU issues.
I probably would not be much more of a help anyway at that point - I have Nvidia card and if the issue is ATI-specific I wouldn't be able to pinpoint / troubleshoot it.

Best of luck and I hope you'll be able to play it on your notebook :)

Actually, it's kind of a strange automated mode.
Whenever I think something along the lines "Get you lazy @#$# and keep writing that Master's thesis" I suddenly find myself at GOG forums.

Fascinating, really.
