Just installed on my Surface Pro 1, and all the characters render nicely, but in remastered mode there are no backgrounds!

All the latest updates are applied to the Surface, but video drivers aren't upgradable from Intel, so can't try any direct from Intel site.

Anyone else had this?

not good. had the same issue but I have dedicated gpu. It did not see the game hence it didn't run.
making my nvidia gpu run the game fixed the issue.

other suggestions
run is administrator.
reinstall.

but i think you will need to wait for patch which fixes the game running on intel gpus.

Yep, forcing the OS to use the nVidia GPU instead of the built in Intel chip fixed this problem for me.

Sorry for not replying earlier. You probably have already installed the patch which fixes the problem, but if you need to force Winidows to use a particular GPU with a program, you'll simply find the option in the context menu after right-clicking on the program's icon (doesn't have to be the main executable, you can click on the shortcut in your start menu or on the desktop). No need to install nVidia experience, or anything else,
