don't mind that thing in the corner (pic 2 is a random pic i found on google) but heres a comparison to the background art of this games page here:

grim dawn: pic 1

and chakan: pic 2

shoulder pad aside, the style DOES seem similar to Chakan the forever man's attire. it even has the shadow of the hat obscuring his facial features as chakan's would.

i wonder, inspiration or coincidence?

oh come on! let me post! guess i can't post links to the pics. :/

Sadly, Grim Dawn suffers from the same Van Helsing-like character art as Victor Vran. This is really a shame, because both Victor Vran and Grim Dawn bring stuff to the table that The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing didn't, and since they're all ARPGs, they're bound to be pigeonholed as clones of each other. In a genre where your games are instantly deemed "Diablo-clones", I would at least try to differentiate them a bit more from one another, art-wise.

[EDIT]

If you're remotely interested in ARPGs, I'd highly recommend giving the two I mentioned a go, if you haven't already. All are available on GOG.

- The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing;
- The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing II;
- The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing III;
- Victor Vran;

maybe, some day, assuming my laptop can run the games (of course, adjusting the graphics settings is an obvious solution).

i think the last such game i played was torchlight 2 a while back and it suffered from that video related problem which would cause it to crash every so often.
