I'm stupid.

Just installed both. Crucible shows up as an option for game to play, and Ashes only appears on the title screen. Taking this to mean both were installed correctly, does that mean Ashes is inserted into the original (like LOD is with Diablo 2) while Crucible is a stand alone campaign (like Underworld is with Sacred)?

Yes it is that way. AoM inserts two new classes you can play and "Act 5 and 6" after the main campaign, Crucible is just some "Arenas".
