Basically, I'd like to know what version of the game will I have access to if I just buy the base game (no DLC). Do I have multiple to choose from? - such as v1.037 (pre-Breaking Dead) ... or will I be stuck with v1.4##?

For me, only the current version, v1.405 is available for full download. The DLC's have separate activation downloads. There are patches available for download to take versions all the way back from 1.310 to current, but I don't know of any way to get the older versions from Gog.
