Hello everybody,
I hope someone can help me with my problem.
I bought and installed Gothic II Gold yesterday. I downloaded the file with the GOG Downloader, and the install went fairly well. I found it slow , but not slower than many other GOG games I tried.
The problem is that In 10 tries to start the game, it actually started only once, and the time it started, I did not see the Intro movie, I got some sound but no images. I pressed the spacebar a few times, and the Menu finally appeared. Once in the menu, I could not use the mouse, only the arrow keys. I navigated to the Video menu, and tried to change the screen resolution, but I could not.
I was now so frustrated that I closed the game usingf the menu commands. I have tried several times after that to restart the game, but it does not work. I checked the Task manager, and I had two occurrences of the game running, with very lot memory footprint. I exited those two occurrences, and tried to start the game, to no avail. I see the hard drive running a few seconds, and that's it.
My computer is a Gateway EC1803h, it is 3 weeks old, so I don't think the hardware requirements are the problem. I am wondering is there could not be a conflict with another GOG game.
I have installed the following Games:
- Might and Magic pack
- Port Royale
- The Guild Gold
- Fallout
- Fallout 2
- Spellforce
EDIT:
I have uninstalled it, deactivated UAC, and installed it again. The install went a lot more smoothly, but the game still won't start. I rebooted the computer, and started the game. There is nothing on the screen, and the HD has been runniong for at least 5 minutes.
Thank you in advance for any help you can provide.

The intro videos not playing is an issue with certain system configurations. You can find solutions for it in this thread. Alternately, you can disable them by going to the installation directory and deleting/moving/renaming them (which will make the game silently skip them).
The menu cannot be navigated with the mouse, only the keyboard. To fix your chosen resolution you need to hit Enter; if you don't do this it won't take effect.
As for the launching issue, that's not quite so straightforward, but try setting the proper resolution to see if that helps.

Thank you for your answer.
The problem is more serious than just launching. The game does not even start. I got access to the menu once. I tried the arrow keys, and the Enter key to no avail.
Since then I am not able to even start the game. I triex XP Compatibility mode, I tried running as admin, I tried ahcnging the video scaling, nothing works.
I double-click on the icon, and I get the waiting cursor for a few seconds, and then nothing. If I remember correctly, when the game did start, I got a message about a virtual drive in memory, or something like that. The box stayed on screen for about 3-4 minutes, then the sound of the movie, then the menu.

Low on virtual memory?
You should try setting your page file to double the amount you have if that is the case. So if you have 2GB, set 4096MB. Not sure how to do this in Vista.
Also for the future you should set problem threads as 'questions'. You'll get quicker responses and people will be more happy to help.

I already have 3 Gigs of RAM, and no app open beside Gothic, so I should not even need Virtual memory.
I have installed the game on my main computer, and the message is "Please wait while initializing and configurint the Virtual Disk File System." On this computer, running Win 7 32 bts, the game does start, but I got really wierd visual when I exited the tower at the start of the game. could be a driver problem. Everything else works great, but you never know...
I also found 2 old threads of people having the same problem. One of them was using Windows 7 64 bits, and the other, I am not sure. I am still on Vista (Waiting for my free Win 7 update), but I am quite sure the problems are related. Unfortunately, no solution was offered,

Hopefully it will solve his problem and anyone else that comes accross the same thing. Think I just missed him being online though so will find out tomorrow probably.

Wrong. If you have a mouse with wheel (and I assume you have) you can navigate with the mouse.

I downloaded the patch, and tried to install it, however, the patch does not let me select the install directory. I tried running the patch normally, and with admin rights, and nothing work. Is there a special procedure with the GOG games?
Thanks again.
Not sure if its only going to work with the retail version or if it will work with this gog version. Try reinstalling the game away from program files so something like C:\games\gothic2. Then point the patch to that directory see if that allows you to install.

What I meant was that there is no mouse cursor for navigating the menu with.

Kudos to you!
It finally works, and your posts sent me on the right track.
The patch does work, but it needs to be applied to Gothic II ONLY.
I followed your instructions, and installed the game in the directory where the poatch was looking for it, I even went further. I installed the game withour Night of the Raven, and that did it. The Patch applied in a few seconds, and I was able to start the game rapidly. I played a little to make sure It worked well, and I re-installed the game with Night of the Raven in the same directory. The installation went very quickly. I think it only installed Night of the Raven, and not the whole game. To make sure, I tried to reinstall the Patch, and I could not. Was it because it was already applied or because Night of the Raven was present? Who knows,
I just restarted the game and it still works. Besides the intro movies, everything seems fine.
Many, many thanks for your help.
