EDIT: THIS IS A GOTHIC 1 QUESTION: (end EDIT)
I've noticed that sleeping tends to make some missions fail. So far, getting Whistler's sword and handing out swamp weed samples at the New Camp will at least not be completable (it didn't actually fail). Whistler accuses you of theft while you have the sword and can't give it to him and the rogues get irritated that you ask about weed but don't have any while the Baal tells you to give out more (these are different rogues - not trying to give it twice). So, a bug or just the way it is?
Also, how in heck does one use picks? Do you need some skill level before you can even activate one? cnrtl up doesn't place it in the hand ready for use as I thought it should 9at least so far).
EDIT: Off topic but: I wanted to amend the topic so people would know this was a Gothic 1 question but I cannot figure out how to change it?

You can't mine with picks, if that's what you're asking; they work as melee weapons just like any other.
Your other problems are things I've never heard of before. Are you using any mod or unofficial patch with this?

Arkose: No mods - straight GOG version. Wrong type of picks - I meant lock picks :) - my bad; I have a terrible habit of not being clear.
I did try to mine with the pick ax - free ore! - but after a while, I got the message. That sort of thing is fun to learn; some other things are just plain irritating.

Lock picks are easy. `use' the chest you want to open, and when you're kneeling in front of it, press either right or left. If you press the wrong direction, you need to start over and there is a chance your lock pick breaks. If you press the right direction, you can press right or left again, until you have completed the correct sequence (length of the sequence varies). You can save before lock picking, determine the sequence and then load and open the chest with that sequence to save your lock picks.

I don't know about your other problems, never encountered it, but then I hardly ever sleep.

Thanks. I guess I'm just clumsy; even with a torch, I tend to fall off ledges and such at night so I sleep until daylight :)
