I'm not sure if this is a glitch or not, but I've heard almost no music since the game started. Lots of well-done ambient noise, but no music. Is there supposed to be any? If so, why haven't I heard it?
For clarification's sake, I'm still in Chapter 1, and have only just gotten far enough to visit all three camps once.

Are you running Vista? Try this patch. If you aren't running Vista this patch may also work, but you should try reinstalling first.
I am running vista.
I cannot seem to get the patches that site links to to work. One of the websites seems to be down, and the other only has a program that will install for Gothic II. In both cases, the websites are in german and I can't understand it all well enough to figure out what's wrong.
Ah, the installer only detects Gothic II. To get around this, open the installer manually with an archiver such as 7-Zip (free). Inside you will find a System folder; extract its contents into Gothic's own System folder, overwriting if prompted.
In theory, the fix will then work.
