I've been playing NotR on Windows Server 2008 (for most purposes identical to Vista). After a few problems I got it running, by following some of the general Vista tips (specifically: installing the game outside of /program files/ and applying the PlayerKit mod which makes it possible to start the game without DirectMusic).
So it's playable, but I'm still having some very annoying problems, which strike either right after starting the game, or maybe every 10 minutes or so of gameplay (on average). One of these happens:
1) Extreme slow down of the entire game, including the game menu and save/reload screens. Only restarting the game fixes it.
2) The textures for the player/npcs/monsters vanish. So basically, everyone becomes invisible, you only see their swords floating in the air.
3) The textures for the environment vanishes; the ground, water, buildings...
2 and 3 can sometimes be fixed by reloading a game, but usually the newly loaded game will be bugged as well, so you're better off simply restarting the game.
So, any ideas on how to solve these?
I've tried the following already but they made no difference, if anything they made the situation worse:
gothic2_vdfs-patch
the IronKeep patch
the Sumpfis texture pack
running the game in various Compatibility Modes
running the game as admin
I also tried the gothic2_fix-2.6.0.0-rev1 (but it turned the game into german, which is a problem for me).

jackmix69: Not really helpful, but I built a new PC and rolled with an ATI card. Game works fine. Nvidia really needs to patch this bug for their users already.

Arkose: According to Nvidia's tech support, "This issue will be fixed without future driver release in June". It's a bit late for you, of course, but a fix is seemingly on its way very soon. :)

Thanks for the news man, that's good to know. I'll be sure to update my other computer's drivers when they come out.
Windows 7, nVidia GTX 260, nVidia drivers v258.96 (Latest as of this post date)
I was having slowdowns, environment disappearances, textures disappearing, and a multitude of other issues.
I found this link: http://www.zenithies.org/articles/5/gothic-i-gothic-ii-on-windows-7-64-bit-troubleshooting-game-wont-start-graphics-freezes.html
The file he links to (http://depositfiles.com/files/hq9bsd81o) has 4 DLLs in it: d3d8.dll, ddraw.dll, libwine.dll, and wined3d.dll. These four DLLs must be placed in your Gothic\System directory.
DO NOT EXTRACT WITH PATHNAMES. IF THE FILES ARE LOCATED IN Gothic\System\System32 IT WILL NOT WORK.
What's happening makes sense - by placing those files in the Gothic System directory they'll be found when a function is asked for, and the function in those libraries will be used instead of the DirectX v11 versions.
In the end - I have some VERY, VERY minor texture fluttering but the game is now VERY playable.
Windows XP SP3 compatibility wasn't necessary for me. YMMV.
