I bought Gothic 3 a while ago and it ran fine. I uninstalled it and haven't played in quite a while. I recently installed it and now the lag makes it totally unplayable. I'm using the same computer as before. 6gb ram, Win10, Intel HD2000 video. The only difference is I had Win7 before so perhaps that's it. I lowered the resolution and graphics to the lowest settings and it's still like watching a slide show.

I haven't seen anyone reporting problems with Gothic 3 and Windows 10 specifically, so I'd guess this isn't a problem of OS incompatibility.
Do you have the same graphics driver installed as before?

While Gothic 3 has a few lags and stutters every now and then no matter what you do or how powerful the system, it should run pretty smoothly on your setup, as you've described.

website offers a lot of advice, I'd especially try [url=https://pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Gothic_3#Game_slows_down_randomly]this potential fix, it's what has helped me before.
Also, you might want to try installing the newest Community Patch. While the GOG installer already includes said patch, it is now an old version (1.74), with the newest being 1.75.14. It's not absolutely necessary, but could help. And the additional fixes and improvements are worth it anyway.
My my reason to not "upgrade" to win10 is the incompatibility with older games. You can try :

- Lower the render distance in game
- Go to a system proprieties and change the performance settings
- Install a dual boot with win7 only to play older games
- Improve your hardware
(...)

But i don't know any "real solution" to play G3 in win10.
This game dynamically loads the world as you move about it, so there has always been some stuttering - it's especially noticeable when you rotate the mouse quickly while an area is loading.

Does it smooth out at all after 30 seconds or so?

The only thing changed is the OS. I played quite a way through before and this time I can't get past the opening battle. I basically just sit back and watch it jerk and stutter. It goes on like that for however long I let it. I'll look into upgrading the community patch and the website mentioned and see if any of those help.
One question. Gothic is the unique "old" game with this performance problem since you "upgraded" to win 10? If there are this problem with other games, i recommend install win 7 in dual boot

Do you know of a site that can explain how to do this (PCs for Dummies :) )?

My PC is really showing it's age. I was thinking of getting a new one for the I-net since Win7 is no longer supported which would of course have Win10 and networking the old one with Win7 for games but, it'd still not be so good for newer games. Dualboot would kill two birds with one stone.
Several people have suggested drastically reducing the resolution, have you tried that? I mean like 800X600 - just so you can get past the opening battle and create a save.

You might also try running away from the City where the battle is taking place and making a save.

There is a command-line in the .ini file called ROI which controls the load-distance of dynamic events (NPC, etc.). If I recall correctly, it's default is set to 4,000. Maybe check that and see if it's been raised. That could have a dramatic impact on performance.

I really doubt, from personal experience, that Windows 10 is the problem.

4000 meters? Feet? Inches? Because if is meter, should be reduced to 500

The Unit that the game uses has nothing to do with feet or meters as far as I know. 4000 is the default. I have no idea what it actually means or measures.

At the 4000 setting, you will see wolves, orcs, people, etc. appear from thin air as you move towards them. Bumping it to 5000 or 6000 (or higher) means that dynamic creatures load earlier, so they don't just appear like magic. But there is a cost in performance. Also, further away sound files are loaded too. So you will hear the ocean from much farther away, which around the opening City, can cause the sound to stutter, and you can hear wolves and bandits fighting from very far away which can be annoying. Waterfalls are particularly annoying. I'll lower and raise the ROI throughout the game depending on the terrain.

This probably doesn't help much, but after installing the CP, copying the .ini from the reddit guide + tweaking the other .ini settings in the reddit guide that are suggested, my game runs beautifully. Windows 10, GTX 970 + i5 4690 cpu, 16 GB ram.

I also turned on 8x SSAA and use a SweetFX preset I found for the game. The orc battle gets about 40-45 FPS but everything else is at least 60. 1920x1080.

Too bad 4K resolution is basically out of the question since the game text doesn't want to scale. It's already a bit small at 1080p, and unreadable at 4K. Wish someone could fix that...
