Are you lost? Are you tired of walking? Are you afraid that roaming monsters are going to eat your face? Worry no more, friend! Blarg Blargson has your back, with these helpful safety tips! Just listen to me, and you need never fear walking along any road!
Tip #1: Water, Water, Everywhere!
You want to know where the safest places in Gothic are? Well, let me tell you, folks; it ain't the roads. It ain't the towns. It ain't even the inside of your own home! No, my friends, the safest place in Gothic for resting or for travel is the deep end of the pool! That's right! There isn't a man or beast in all of Gothic-land that will follow you into the deep part of a river or a lake, and if they do, who cares? They can't attack you while they're swimming! So if you need a quick escape, jump into the nearest pond and wait for your enemy to go away, or swim straight across the river to the other side. Apparently, even the monsters which are clearly supposed to be aquatic are hyrdrophobes...
Tip #2: Know when and where to use shortcuts!
Oh, sure, you COULD walk all the way to your destination, but wouldn't you rather teleport? If you EVER get a magic rune that lets you warp instantly to anyplace, hold onto that rune! The shortest distance between two points is a ripple in space-time, so take advantage of the quick and easy way from point A to point B!
Okay, so maybe you don't have a rune, or you're out of magic power. It happens. However, be aware that other shortcut options are open to you. Remember those rivers and lakes I mentioned before? Well, it turns out that following a waterway downstream is a great way to get from one place to another, fast, without any risk of injury! Don't bother yourself about waterfalls, either; as long the water you fall into is sufficiently deep, it doesn't really matter how far you drop!
Speaking of long drops, have you ever considered jumping off a cliff? No, I'm not advising suicide, folks, but leaping from a high place IS the fast way down! Just make sure to turn your body sideways (press the "Strafe" key) as you fall, and no harm will come to you even if you just dropped 5 kilometers onto stone pavement! (Note: This may not work if you don't live inside a protective magic barrier)
Tip #3: Know when and where NOT to use shortcuts!
Did you notice that many roads go directly through forests? Did you notice how many people tell you specifically NOT to go into the forests? There's a contradiction in there, somehere, folks, but suffice to say that the shortcut through the woods is NOT as safe as you'd probably like it to be! Wooded areas contain wolves, shadowbeasts, and sometimes worse things, so stay well away from them!
Taking the road less traveled by can make all the difference, even if your name isn't Robert Frost. If you see guards on the road up ahead, and some cliffs that you can climb on the right, use that upper body strength and take the high road! Your foes generally seem to fear heights as much as they do water!
Tip #4: Gain the High Ground!
There's no question about it! A man at the top of a cliff with a bow has a distinct advantage over a person at the bottom of the cliff with no bow! Yes, my friends, if you want to make your escape or get to an unassailable position, just shinny up the nearest ledge! Most of your enemies lack the ability to jump or climb up after you, and even when they do, the time they spend climbing is time when they're not attacking you or defending themselves. Sometimes you can even drive enemies off of ledges to their deaths! Be warned: this approach generally doesn't work on harpies.
Tip #5: Be prepared!
Whenever you go anywhere, be sure to bring plenty of food, water, potions, weapons, ammunition, miscellaneous gagets, spell scrolls, money, magic ore, priceless artifacts, random garbage, essential plot-items, and clean underwear. Since there's no restriction on what you can carry, carry as much as you can! (Note: for hygenic reasons, it is advisable to cook your food before eating it).
Tip #6: Be Alert!
Pay attention to your surroundings! There could be enemies coming from any direction, but there could also be hidden caves or food to forage! Mushrooms, flowers, grains, herbs, and much much more await those with a keep eye and an open pocket! Don't worry; absolutely NONE of the wild plants or animal meats in Gothic-land are poisonous, although some of them do taste odd...
Tip #7: Bring a friend!
If you have an ally waiting to back you up, then by all means let them come along for the ride! They can guide you, give you advice, and you get XP for their kills. If nothing else, they might be able to take a few arrows for you.
Tip #8: The Final Solution!
You'll only be REALLY safe when there isn't a single monster or person left alive to threaten you! So, your duty is clear: for the sake of your own sanity and survival, you must kill EVERYTHING.
