The tale of Gothic is one of my most enjoyable CRPG experiences, ranking up there with the likes of Baldur's Gate, Fallout and Planescape: Torment. The replayability, character development, sense of adventure and story are the strong points. The weak points are minor bugs, slightly confussing controls, frustrating but rewarding combat and game mechanics. Many can either love or hate the very difficult learning curve that this game represents when compared to more modern and yet tamed, linearised and homogenised experiences that can be found in games like Oblivion and Mass Effect.
If you're yet to experience Gothic, this is a definite bargain, well worth a look by any RPG addict, or a newcomer to the genre looking for some of the earlier yet still recently modern classics.
I agree with every word you said, only the rating (4 stars) seemed timid to me, in the light of your review. If this one puts modern RPGs to shame, which RPG would get 5 stars?
Cheers, nice review.

Gothic 2 with the Night of the Raven expansion, of course!
Torment would get 10 because it is THAT awesome.
I'm have yet to try Torment (waiting for it to come out on GOG hehe).
Gothic 2 is a great game, but the first one made me see there can be RPGs even as good as Ultima VII the black gate. All right, that's entirely personal, but then again I think Gothic 1 accomplished too much in the relation between gameplay, high challenge and atmosphere to be left behind, even if Gothic 2 is technically better. I'm very biased towards the three Gothics.

Here's a tip for you. Put 18 in INT and 18 in WIS when in the initial character editing screen. Put about 12 in STR. The reason I say to put 18 in INT and WIS is because you get better conversation options in the game thus more chances to get XP from just talking to people aaannnnd you get more of the story that way.
