If you're still curious at all about Arcania, the emo is enough to show you what it's like.

EDIT: oops, that should read "demo"... but yes, the main character does look like an emo. :D

Thank you for being so helpful, guys. With the information you gave me, I decided that Risen was worth getting, after all, so I decided to purchase it.

It turns out, however, that Steam's version (on sale for $15) has an activation limit of 3 machines. There is rumor that one activation is renewed every 45 days, but there is no evidence to support that. More importantly, however, is the fact that Steam has apparently run out of activation keys. That is to say, you may purchase Risen during this weekend at sale price, but you cannot play it due to a lack of activation keys. No, there is no warning given to prospective buyers, but Steam says they are awaiting more keys from the publisher.

The publisher, Silver, is away for the weekend. How convenient....

In conclusion, I do not wish to spend my money on a game I won't be able to play. The DVD version has only a disc check, but it is difficult to come by in the U.S. Only a few stores still sell it, and they sell it for about $40.

It looks as though I will have to be patient and wait for a re-release of the game.

Dammit -as a trusting buyer I assumed steam would be able to provide the software they sold me. I bought Risen on that deal, haven't tried it yet, but if Steam don't deliver I will be seriously pissed off.

Thanks for the head up. Hopefully it will delay others.

This happens all the time when Steam has weekend deals on games that require activation and underestimates how successful they will be. If you're planning to get the game anyway this is the time to get it whether you can play it or not; the problem will be resolved soon enough, and by the time they get it sorted the sale might be over.
Here's the latest from Deep Silver's CEO (or whatever they call him):

"On the other hand it forces me to beg you for your patience until we finished the "quest for the missing keys". While our support is also around for you on weekends, feeding the server with activation keys is not a trivial task so we'll have to wait for the experts to arrive in the office on Monday. The keys will then be passed to Valve and every legitimate buyer should get his key to play the game as it worked before. After all we didn't have any issues before.

"Please bear with us until we sortet out the issue and although I know that we caused a lot of distress and anger I'm pretty confident that that everyone of you will be able to enjoy the game shortly."
More information/details may be found at this Steam Forums thread.

So, they're going to fix the missing key problem, and they can be expected to help work out any problems with activations. That means you only have to decide whether or not you're willing to buy the game on Steam. If so, it's $15 this weekend.
