When I click on the Gothic 3 icon to start the game, I get this message:

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------

The program can't start because d3dx9_40.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem.

I've deleted and reinstalled 2 times now with the same result.

Any suggestions?

Thanks you.

Install the latest DirectX End-User Runtimes. This will install the missing files.
Thank you.

While that did work, I'm now stuck with a black screen that does not go away during the boot.

However, this is a different problem unassociated with the problem you helped me fix.

Thanks again.

I can explain this problem as well. :) Gothic 3 generates a texture cache file the first time you run it and shows a black screen while doing this. It can take several minutes (depending on your system) but will eventually finish.

Once the file has been made the game will launch normally whenever you go to play it.

Yeah, I've read about how it does that. But with my computer, it just sits there on the black screen...forever. The other night, I left it on all night while I slept. In the morning it was still on the black screen.

What's funny though, is it shows it's still computing in the task manager.

Oh well, just a bug with my computer I suppose. But thanks for helping me get it to that point.

Just figured it out.

You pointed me in the right direction, but Direct X was not launching automatically. Once I launched it manually, the game started in less than 15 seconds.

Thanks again!

Is there also a solution for Windows 8? Because the System Reqirements for DirectX End-User Runtimes (June 2010) does not include Windows 8.

Don't worry about this, download and install it, there's no special version for Win 8. ;)

Thanks! You solved my fears.
I used the "DirectX-Endbenutzer-Runtimes Web Installer " and it works.
