Spoilers for the early part of the game, specifically the "Member of the city guard" quest.

So, I can already join any faction I want, but trying to figure out how to trigger the way of joining the militia by ratting out the Thieves Guild. I've reported all the criminals, found the Thieves Guild, played along and then went to Andre, thinking telling him about it would be it.
However, while I can tell Andre that I've found the guild, he asks me whether I've dealt with the criminals. The only option is no and he says he'll give me some more time to deal with. I have no idea what this quest path wants from the player. Does it expect you to kill the 3 members of the Thieves Guild by yourself and then report to Andre? I would have assumed that he'd send a couple militiamen to the sewers after telling him where they are located and that you could join in on the raid. But nothing like that happens. Did pretty much everything else and just killing them is the only option I can think of. Is that it?
EDIT:
Answering myself: yes, you have to kill the Thieves Guild members. Which can be quite difficult with Night of the Raven, as the guild members are stupidly strong. They will one shot you even if you have 200+ HP. It is doable if you perfectly block their every attack and chip them down, but it's very difficult. You also have to somehow split them up. Fighting more than one is not feasible until you are in a much more advanced phase of the game, which shows just how little care Night of the Raven took with the original game balance, as using this way to join the Militia in a timely manner is pretty much impossible now.
Also, don't report their location to Andre before you have killed them. Because he will then have the sewers cleared by his soldiers, denying you the chance to join the Militia that way, along with the experience from killing them yourself.
The power gaming route would of course be to join the guild, do all the quests for them and only after that kill them and report to Andre. But it would make zero sense from a role-playing perspective, so I wanted to hunt them down while still guildless in chapter 1.
