Hi,
The "note" on the page for Gothic 2 Gold Edition suggests that it's a good idea to install the night of the raven expansion right after installing the main game, because if you install it later you'll wreck your savegames. However... when I downloaded & installed the file from GOG, there's just one file and it does just one installation. Am I right in thinking that this has installed both the game and the expansion, and that the note is no longer relevant? Or have I missed something?

I'll quote an earlier post by Arkose from 5/1/09:
NotR is selected by default in the installer, but you can uncheck it by clicking Options. The same applies to any other GOG titles that have expansions included.
Hope this helps.

See warreni's answer for your specific question.
Just a comment: true that your save games will be lost if you play first the game without the extension. On the other hand, the game with the extension is harder than without. Some players not used to Gothic might find it very challenging.
Night of the Raven makes Gothic II a better, more complete game, but it also makes it extremely difficult (especially if you have not already played through Gothic II without it at least once, or if you develop your character's skills incorrectly and end up underpowered). If you are the sort of person who always chooses the "Hard" difficulty on your first time through a game, NotR may be just your sort of thing; if you're expecting a level of difficulty more like the first Gothic, however, Gothic II will be much more enjoyable without NotR.

Ack! Didn't realise this... the game is hard but I was sort of expecting that since I played a bit of Gothic 1 and that was quite hard too... will have to investigate what I need to do in order to not gank my character... hope it's not too late already...

One thing you could do to save your character is to DL NOTR customiser from World of Gothic. This utility lets you increase the XP per level (among other things) so you can experience the add on world but be a little stronger.
