First time I tried to post this it bugged out so hopefully not going to double-thread here...

So I first tried playing Gothic 2 as far back as 2005, maybe even earlier...

But I only really got 'into' the Gothic series in the past 4-5 years when I beat 1 and fell in love with it.

In the past handful of years I've given Gothic 2 a try multiple times and made the mistake of playing it immediately after Gothic 1. I always had bad expectations and ended up having a really hard time playing and always gave up- not so much because I couldn't beat it at all, but because the level of resistance I encountered playing it always turned me off.

I am going to beat it this time.

I came in knowing that this game has kicked my ass before and I was ready. I decided to go pure warrior rather than a mage, especially since I had learned that individual spells have their own LP cost, which makes it even harder to properly balance my LP usage.

But you know, even taking my time and killing everything that was reasonably within my limits (and some things not) and abusing the escorts a nice bit I STILL find that this game has really bizarre expectations of what I'm capable of.

Other than hunting (which I kind of had to experiment with for my future reference playing this) I was really careful with my LP but I still find that there are a ton of enemies around that I simply cannot handle reasonably! Then it struck me: maybe the designers didn't INTEND for most fights to be one-sided butcherings (well except sometimes when you're on the receiving end) and THAT'S why most 1v1 fights for me now are literal KOBK death matches where I have a very real possibility of dying.

I don't even want to fight Orcs or Dragon Snappers right now... even wargs and seekers are quite dangerous for me.

EDIT: Oh! I also found out that apparently fireball does magic damage, rather than dragon fire damage! (At least, if seekers throwing balls of flame that deal 75 damage = fireball)

EDIT2: Oh! Forgot to mention the most obvious thing! PATROLLING ENEMIES IN A GOTHIC GAME! I was mind-boggled when I saw a shadowy figure walk past the doorway when I was talking to Orlan at the Dead Harpy Inn.

But I'm still learning. This is what makes the Gothic series great. There's such a shocking amount of depth. Before I found skeletons to be really ridiculously dangerous but I found out I could SPAM-BLOCK! Using this I can fight skeletons with minimal health loss and occasionally even defeat them without losing health!

Another thing- I really ought to explore more of the 'unexplored part of the island' with the water mages. Maybe I'm expected to have dealt with most of that by now?

Anyway despite the occasionally crushing difficulty I'm having a good time and making some real progress.

The Ultima and Gothic series have always impressed me and as for today I have not found the same experience and deep inmersion in any other game.

You should give a try to the first Risen if you haven't done it already. I enjoyed it a lot.

If you haven't completed the main quest in the new part of the island for the Water Mage, you can't go on in the main plot of the third chapter.
By the way, you must first complete the main quest of the first chapter (talking with paladins about the dragons) and only starting from the second chapter you can get to Jharkendar.

I MUST quote this post. The first Risen has really a "Gothic feeling", even if it's the beginning of another saga, in a different world... !

Yep! Beaten Risen 1 once on 360 (ages ago) and once on PC (more recently). Definitely a Gothic game.

Stopped playing Risen 2 out of disgust several times, maybe someday I'll play it.
