I have tried to start the game, but the only thing it does is register it as a process, and never starts the game, I even tried the World of Gothic GothicStarter 2.6a and got a file path not found error, though I pasted in the same directory as the game was located, even having Windows ask me if I wanted to replace the "system" and the *_work* folders, and I said yes to them, and then when I start the game, the error message starts with the directory I had the GothicStarter in and has a line like -******** followed with a not found message. Are there any other solutions here, or should I consider getting a refund? I read that GOG is now having the 30 day money back guarantee if one simply cannot get his or her game to work. The exact error message I receive upon trying to start the game on GothicStarter is in an attachment. Thank you for reading.

1. Reinstall the game and make sure your antivirus / firewall software does not block it. Also be sure to install it in a location other than C:\Program Files.
2. Run Gothic II.exe (as administrator) directly from the folder where you have your game installed.

If 2. does not work,

3. Uninstall GOG.com Gothic II entry from installed programs list (Control Panel -> Programs and Features). This is not the game, so don't worry.

Please post back if it helped.
Cheers.

Here are some other suggestions.

1) Disable UAC. It always complained about my old games until I just shut it off.

2) Disable video scaling. I wonder if this may be your main problem. Go to System/Gothic.ini and set scaleVideos = 0

3) I assume you've already tried it in compatibility mode along with "run as admin", yes?

4) There may be advice in this thread: http://www.rpgwatch.com/forums/showthread.php?t=7359

I had this problem recently with Gothic 1 and Gothic 2 (Windows 8 is my operating system). I set them to run in compatibility mode (Windows XP compatibility mode) and set them to run as an admin. That got both Gothic 1 and Gothic 2 to actually run but they ran in a small window. I took them out of compatibility mode and took away their admin privileges and suddenly both games started just fine, in regular resolution and all. I have no idea why, that was just a completely random fix that makes no logical sense (to me anyway) but it worked.
