Hi all.

No doubt this question has been covered but I am having trouble finding the answer. I noticed that the GOG Gothic page does not list the game as being compatible with Win 7 (unlike Gothic 2 which they claim is compatible).

How much trouble am I in for if I try to run Gothic 1 on a Win 7 64bit system with a widescreen 16:9 monitor? Is it possible to get it running with a minimum of crashes and if so can anyone direct me to a good resource with instruction on any modifications and tweaks I need to get it running stable?

Thanks.

Chris

Played and completed it using Win7, in a 16:10 widescreen (1280x800) without any problem, using the Texture Pack found here. I did have to set the video scaling to off to be able to watch the videos, and I had a problem with a portcullis in one of the later chapters, which was solved by running the unmodded game, not the textured one, but other than those (and a total of 5 crashes or so) I had no other problem.

P.S. It goes without saying that you should install it to a non UAC controlled directory (aka not Program Files).
For the widescreen fix, refer to this thread. For fixing the video scaling (if videos are black or badly skewed) refer to this post.

One must-have fix is the frame rate unlock, which lets the game run as high as your refresh rate rather than the normal cap of 25. Install the Player Kit and then run the FPS patch (right click, "Run as administrator").

Both Gothic games will crash on occasion but this is just the way these games are and isn't specific to Windows 7. It isn't often enough to worry about though.

This is unnecessary; any GOG release which has issues with UAC comes with the necessary tweaks already set for you by GOG (e.g. Arx Fatalis); Gothic is not one of them.

OH YOU HAVE GOT to be shitting me....

So that's why the game "lagged" just a bit every time I played it. And with computers that could easily run it at max. FFFFFFFUUUUUU

Anyway, thanks for this. Finally no more lag. :D
Thanks everyone for all your help. I seem to have everything running smoothly now at 1600x900 with the texture mod and the fps mod. Now if only I could get the hang of these awkward controls...

You probably will. Think of it as an interactive EXP counter. Over time, it will fill up. By the time you get to the [REDACTED], you won't even think what you're doing.
Even Gothic 2 has some issues with its performance on Windows 7.
I couldn't fix it, and I've tried everything possible.

I think it depends on what kind of hardware you have.
