Hey,

so I've been playing gothic 1 for few days to feed the nostalgia. I've played yesterday and everything was fine. Today however, gothic won't start. I have not changed a single thing in the system, or in the game settings. The game simply goes into the background. The process is there, but the game is not popping up.

1. I have tried compatibility and running as admin.
2. I have closed all unnecessary programs.
3. I've restarted my PC. Twice.
4. I've verified game files. Twice.
5. I've reinstalled the game.

Nothing works.

Edit: I've also tried deleting game settings file to force generating a new one, but it didn't work either.

I just installed this game yesterday and it is doing the exact same thing on my computer. Anybody know what might be causing this?
Same problem. But after I reinstalled the game, an old problem came back. The problem with null experince from creatures and controls crash due to pressing digit buttons.
If that's of any help, I was able to run the game after uninstalling it and deleting all user data, then installing again. It caused my computer to restart after like 2-3 hours and the problem reappeared. The same thing did not fix the problem this time.
It's DEP. Try to add Gothic.exe or GothicMod.exe in exceptions.
I'm bypassing the problem by running gothic twice (two processes in task manager) then killing rundlll_32 process. It forces one gothic to close and runs the other.
Try to kill Logitech gaming software. Wokred for me.
Nope. Just set the DEP settings to system programs only.
I'm having this same issue. Newly installed (was never on this machine) and nothing happens, only a GOTHIC.EXE process. DEP is system only. Win 7 Pro. Tried the run it twice/kill rundll32 trick and then it starts. Not great at all but at least it works.
I'm assuming you are on Windows 7.
If that's the case, then read this topic. Basically it's Games Explorer problem.

yep that work i remember the same issue 18 yrs ago when they release game
Wanted to play Gothc 1 again (und compare to the currently on Steam available playable teaser of a remake) and encountered the same problem.
Changing DEP didn't do anything, but stopping the Logitech Gaming Software and unsing compatability mode for Windows XP SP2 did the trick for me.

Install SystemPack 1.8.
Here's where to find the system packs for Gothic 1 and 2:
