I'm having a bit of difficulty parrying properly in Gothic 1. I'm still trying my hand at the combat, fighting scavengers to get the hang of it. Parrying their attacks is difficult. It seems that when they're in the process of launching an attack towards me, I cannot parry. Only after the scavenger's attack is accomplished will my character go into "parry" mode. I'd be glad to hear some tips on how to better parry attacks.

You can't parry animal attacks, only weapon attacks by human (or humanoid) enemies. Parrying also doesn't work all that well in Gothic 1, and you're far better off trying to just time your attacks to interrupt your opponent's attacks.
The best way to parry is to step backwards. Your character will automatically block while moving in reverse and some types of enemy attacks will miss entirely when you do this.
Thanks. I've got 2 other questions:

- What do Strength and Dexterity do?
- Why is it that some weapons with higher damage cost less than weapons with lower damage?

Strength and Dex are often requirements for various weapons (strength more for melee weapons, dex more for ranged weapons). Strength also increases the amount of melee damage you do, and I think dex increases the amount of ranged damage you do.

Just the way the devs decided to make it I guess. Although in some cases the higher price is due to a benefit other than damage, such as lower requirements, faster swing speed, or a one-handed vs a two-handed weapon.

Ah okay. I'm currently torn between a Digger's Discipline and a Judgment Sword. The former's value is 160, while the latter is 97. The Judgment deals 10 more damage than the Digger's, and requirements are about the same. Should I just go with the Judgment?
Looks like the price difference is probably due to Diggers Discipline having a slightly lower strength requirement. Definitely go with the Judgment sword.
Does dexterity affect weapon and movement speeds?
No.
