I checked all seven pages in this forum and couldn't find how in the manual:
- how does one descend a ladder?
- How does one swim?
Stumbled onto the new camp - still looking for the old camp.
Hey, how are the mosquitoes (blood biters or whatever) at the swamp camp? Seems they'd be an occupational hazard :) .
This is an initial play-through so I'm mainly trying to get a feel for things. Already been robbed once by Lefty. Guess I'll have to avoid him as I have no intention of being a water boy.
This question / problem has been solved by lordhoffimage
To descend a latter, walk up to the edge of it and hit whichever button is set to "manipulate object."
To swim, just walk into water that's too deep to wade in. There is no way to manually activate swimming, nor can you dive.
The mosquitos aren't so bad, as long you stay inside camp boundaries. Once you're a higher level, they should prove no threat to you. What you REALLY need to watch out for is the swamp-sharks; they're nigh-indestructable unless you're a high-enough level to hurt them.

CNTRL Up arrow got me up but after going down one unit, I started to climb again. When I go into deep water, I just sit there and drown. Direction keys don't get me anywhere. I'm using the alternate setting so I can use the "w" key (etc) to run forward; maybe that's the problem. Well, guess all I can do is try again.

"Mud" sure is irritating - can't seem to get him eaten by the scavengers and whacking him with my sword only temporarily lost him. Guys gonna get me into trouble. Maybe I can sick "Lefty" on him to enslave him.

EDIT: OK, found a thread on another forum - apparently (haven't verified yet) the right click button needs to be depressed while swimming.

There's mention of a patch here - is the game prepatched or do I have to hope some site still has it and the prepatch "fix"? Is the patch needed? So far, all that seems to happen is a frozen screen that requires a cold boot.

All GOG games come prepatched to the newest (I think giants didn't, as an earlier patch was more popular for multiplayer ... though I might be wrong). Some games even get some new fixes so they are the best possible version.
They don't ever come with community fixes though, which I don't remember Gothic 1 having anyway. So just keep that in mind.
It's been years since i played G1 but in G2 you swim forward by clicking mouse1

By the name (which of course I don't remember), I'd guess that it wasn't an official patch - could easily be wrong, though. It sounds as if I needn't worry about it - wouldn't fix the freeze problem anyway from what I've read.
EDIT: Well, when crossing a stream, the nameless one swam - wonder why he just floundered in deep water when falling into ponds before? Still can't go down a ladder, though - thankfully, most have been low enough to jump without dying (most!).
EDIT2: OK - down arrow! I tried using the down arrow to descend a ladder the first time but since one does that with his back to the ladder, that is what I did. Works fine with down arrow when facing the ladder.
Still can't swim in deep water, though. Across a stream it is basically automatic but jump into deep water and he just flounders. I guess the answer is, stay out of ponds, lakes, etc.

I know this thread is old but in case this can help anyone else who is having trouble with swimming and finds this thread searching for answers like I was, here goes:

I eventually figured it out, playing around in the pool near the beginning of the demo for Gothic 1 (so apologies if any of this is wrong, since it's mainly the result of trial and error). The floundering mentioned above is actually the character diving. This is done by either hitting the key set to jump or, as mentioned above, the right mouse button (at least in the alternate WASD mode don't know if it's different in the default mode). If you fall in to the water and start to drown, you probably tried to jump out or accidentally hit the RMB and are in diving mode. To come back to the surface press down (or whatever is your backwards movement key) the character should right himself, now repeatedly tap jump or RMB until the breath meter disappears. (Stop tapping once it does though or you will make the character dive again.) Release any buttons you are holding and the camera should move above the waterline.

(If you actually want to dive pressing forward will point you towards the bottom, the turn keys will turn you, and tapping jump will make you swim in the direction you are pointing. So when diving you've got a sort of flight-stick-style inverted control with jump causing you to swim.)

You should be on the surface now and swimming normally. Normal swimming is actually rather simple; use the normal movement keys to move about on the surface of the water. It's really only that diving thing that can throw you off when you don't know what you're doing and you accidentally trigger a dive.

I eventually figured it out but underwater movement was still difficult for me. The problem I had was I was falling into the deep end so there was no option to surface swim and the controls didn't seem to right him. Moving the mouse back seemed to do the trick but every time I had to dive, I was sure to save and usually had to try several times. The old tower was especially tricky.
I know this is really old, but I've read a recent article about Gothic II (http://www.rpgwatch.com/articles/gothic-ii-retrospective-284.html) and I am starting the series (of course) by playing Gothic 1.

Regarding the awkward swim controls (and without spoilering too much): if I just choose to ignore all swimmable places, what will I lose ? Underwater chest containing good loots, some quests won't be completed, etc ?

Thanks!

Hey there,

You will lose absolutely nothing.
However, you better be prepared to know how to swim down, because you will need it during the Main Quest.

It's really easy, actually: after you jump in water, holding Alt makes your toon swim, it's just up / down direction is opposite from looking up / down while on solid ground.
You'll get used to it in max 5 min.

And by the way, Gothic I is one bloody hell of an amazing game!

Just to be certain, surface swimming is not a problem at all - underwater is the tricky part so if you wish to explore, say, Xardas' old tower in the middle of the lake or want to find the pirate treasure on the little island, no need to avoid them.

No, part of the eye patch tasks where Greg asks you to find several "x" marks the spot treasures he buried - he tells you one is on a little island by the twin water falls. These aren't much of a treasure, 1-3 items generally, and if you want the XPs, you have to return them to Greg.
