I tried Gothic II a while back, but I found it to be very difficult and I stopped playing it. From what I read, the expansion did make it very hard, and the version on GOG includes the expansion. Hopefully the first game won't be as bad!
The controls are unorthodox, but they work fine once you get used to them.

It's better to play Gothic 1 first anyway, because Gothic 2 is a direct continuation of the Gothic 1 story. Most people like Gothic 2 better, but most people agree Gothic 1 has the better atmosphere.
