Hi there! I had a major lag attack on Gothic 1 - the FPS didnt go above 30. so i found this "FPS mod" which raises your FPS above 70 (or as high as your machine can go).
You might wanna check it out, people who lag. But find the instructions to the installation.
Gothic 1 was designed to lock the frame rate for some reason; the patch simply removes the cap. It's a shame GOG didn't integrate this fix themselves.

For future reference for anyone else wanting to fix this all you need to do is install the Player Kit and then apply the GothicFps patch by running it and pointing it to GothicMod.exe (found in the System subfolder of wherever you installed Gothic to). If you are using Vista or Windows 7 you will need to launch GothicFps as an administrator by right-clicking it and choosing "Run as administrator".

Good info Arkose. I will try this, as the relative slideshow framerate kinda bugged me. Should be stickied.

How does "2" rate this way? Even though I have a quality set up and tons of free space (and often the antivirus and firewall turned off), it fairly often slows to a crawl - sometimes just freezing (which requires a reboot and waiting for some library to be reconfigured). It sounds like not but, will the patch fix this too?

PS - I once mentioned the "mind altering potion" and 1500 xp - the last time I just got 750 xp - it may be somewhat random. Haven't tried it this time around yet.

This patch is for the first game only. Gothic II has no frame rate limit, but due to some oddity of how the game was made there are noticeable frame rate drops in the more complex parts of the map (such as the city) even on powerful systems--although I've never had it totally freeze on me like you're describing.

One workaround is to temporarily adjust the draw distance to a lower setting when in such areas (with F1-F4), toggling it back when you're further away. Some players have reported getting better results by adjusting the caching settings in the ini but I haven't tried this myself.

Definitely something to try - I've already noted in my mind the main areas (city, as you said , and the valley of mines pass - really any rocky area).

BTW, I did the mind altering drug now - got 1250xp this time. Definitely some randomness involved. I suspect 1200xp could happen too - maybe even some higher or lower values in intervals of 250xp.

works! thanks! sticky this
The "Gothic 1 Systempack" also disables the fps limitation and fixes problems with newer windows versions.
