Hi everyone in this great community! Posting this in case others have had the same problem and know of a work-around. Thanks!
Playing Gothic 1 v1.08k downloaded from GOG without further mods or tampering. Here's the scenario:
I love exploring so I went to the so-called Fog Tower (tower located N-E on cliff just above a beach with some Fire Lizards and shipwrecks), and this was early in the game, maybe in first chapter but definitely not later than the second. Climbing down staircase after starcase in torch-lit caves, no lagging or no worries other than skeletons ramming me hard so I went back to the surface and continued the quests at hand.
I'm now at chapter 3 and much stronger and well-equipped, so I navigated back to the tower, entering and starting on the first staircase... But now the game is lagging something unbelivably, AND: it's only when I'm facing north. Even when I have descended the caves somewhat, the bug(?) is this very apparent every time the player character is turning towards north or towards the area where the sea and horizon would be.
I reloaded a game from the first chapter, went to the tower and everything was running fine, so I've gathered that it's not a purely computer-related issue but something related to the actual game?
Luckily, or presumably, this place on the map is only needed for an optional quest and not for the main story, but I would really like to be able to play through this area! Anyone experienced something like this and know how to fix it without starting a new game? (Also: inherently sceptic to third-party .dll and .exe downloads unless they're very popular and tested at length.)
Best

Quick specs: HP laptop (couple of months old), Windows 10, AMD graphics.
PS Edited the key words (locations etc) with bold types if someone would like to skim through my lengthy text for the important bits. We'll see eventually how that worked out.
