So I got the videos to work just fine on Gothic 1, but whenever I talk to anyone it gets really choppy and looks like its on the verge of crashing. The characters will move but the background will stay stationary, and a 30 second conversation drags on for about roughly 2 minutes since the dialogue will only continue once the character's movements are complete. I have it set in the XP service pack 2 compatibility mode, and running as the administrator. I'm using Windows 7. Any help would be greatly appreciated. :(

Same happens to me. Quite annoying.
Have you tried updating your video card drivers? Both games have known issues with outdated Nvidia drivers on Windows 7. Even if you don't have an Nvidia card this is the first thing to try.

For reference you can download the latest drivers from the links below:
Nvidia
ATI/AMD
Intel GMA

How did you get the videos to work? I was just on here looking for a way to fix the FMV since the opening sequence doens't work, and I saw this.

Thanks. I'll check that out when I get around to playing Gothic again.

Tried doing this, when I hit save, I get an error that says access denied. It won't let me change the ini file.

That means you're editing the wrong file--the one you want is within:

%LOCALAPPDATA%\VirtualStore

The folders there match where the game is installed to, then edit the version there.

Still didn't work. I'd ask if having the player mod kit installed could be the problem, but I had the same issue without the mods installed.

At least going through un-hiding Appdata fixed the Ati Catalyst Host Application Error I was having.

Sadly though, no Gothic movies.

Hmm, strange. OK, try the following:

1. Open Notepad as an administrator (right click, "run as administrator")
2. From within Notepad, use File>Open and browse to the aforementioned VirtualStore file.
3. Make the change and save the file.

Doing it this way should get around it.

Still nada. Even disabled anit-aliasing which was the first tip to seeing the movies.

What's interesting is I fired up Gothic 2, and I've got the same problem with that one, can't see the cutscene videos. I've got an updated driver for my video card, so I really don't know what the problem is. I don't have any issues with any other games either.

Wow, after some heavy hitting troubleshooting, I finally got it. I had to manually change the gothic.ini in both the Virtual Page as your instructions directed, as well as the file in the install folder. The way I finally got it to save on the install folder's version was to cut and paste the gothic.ini to desktop, make the change, then cut and paste it back. Videos work, I'm a happy camper. Thanks for your help. Hope this helps somebody else down the line. This also works for Gothic 2.
