I've heard that it makes the game x10 harder, and I was wondering if it would be a good idea to just go with vanilla G2. If the difficulty is of the "Avoid enemies and choose your battles because you're basically helpless" style (a la something like the beginning levels of System Shock 2), I don't really mind. But if it's the "You are forced into fights that cause you to die instantly 100 times in a row" sort of hard (like the last levels of Far Cry), I really would prefer not to have to deal with that.

Basically, does the added difficulty make you feel like you're a helpless survivor, or is it just trial-and-error frustration?

It's not just the difficulty; Notr adds a lot of good content too. Notr is certainly difficult at the start until you figure out how to do things but the vanilla game isn't that much easier.
I think it depends on whether or not you think you might want to replay the game. If you're only going to play through once, definitely go with Notr. The extra starting difficulty is well worth it.
BTW, experience is everything. After 4 or 5 plays, I don't find Notr to be difficult at all but it does require planning and careful leveling which is not really possible on your first playthrough unless you depend on a guide or walkthrough.
I'd say it's mostly the first kind of hard you mentioned. There are areas you cannot simply walk into because you'll get killed real fast.
I'd install NotR, it blends well into the main game. I did not find NotR too hard but I guess that's because I had finished both Gothics several times before. Just remember to spend your learning points wisely, they're really valuable. Concentrate on a combat style quite soon, it makes all the difference.
Thanks for the feedback guys. NotR installed. We'll see how it works!

(+1 for both of you, since I was stupid and forgot to mark this as a question)

NotR defines what's lost in many modern games. It is serious gaming ; )
NotR been kicking my butt for the last 2 months. The hardest part is I get so lost in the game I need a window at lest 3 hours long to even start playing the game.
