Hi, I'm considering getting Gothic 2 but I don't want to play the gold version.
I saw that a couple years ago, if you buy gothic 2 gold, GOG support provided a link with the possibility to install only gothic II Classic. Are they still doing this?
I don't want to spend my money for nothing: I just want to play Gothic 2 Classic and NOT the Gold version.

Thanks!
I don't think so

Yeah, as csanjuro said, I don't think so either. But you do have two options. One, buy it here at gog, and use this mod. It is not 100% classic, as the gold edition changed a couple of things internally, but it is identical in most ways.

Another option is to buy it from that other place, you know the one named after water reaches 212 degrees F (or 100 degrees C). Their version comes with a pop up box that allows you to choose to play classic or the gold edition. However, I don't know how they did that. I don't know if it's the "true" classic version, or if it's just the gold version with the linked mod above automatically included.

There is a third option of course, If you would like, you can play the Gothic 2 NotR version without worrying about when to use perma buffs like potions, herbs, and stone tablets, which makes the game easier to manage. It still has the increase in costs to train, but it only "counts" what you've trained, not any perma boosts you received.

How this option works is like this: Using strength as an example, let's say you've trained strength to 25, and have found a strength potion (perma +3), and you found stone tablets adding another 10, so that if you used them your strength would now be 38 (25 trained to plus 3 from potion plus 10 from stone tablets equals 38). In vanilla NotR, if you wanted to train further you would have to spend 2LP's for each point of strength because it's over 30. However, with this mod, it would only cost 1LP because it only "counts" what you've actually trained, not the perma boosts. What this means in practice is that you no longer have to "hold" your perma boosts until you've trained up to a point that makes using them worthwhile. You can use them as you wish and they won't affect the cost of further training.

Please note that using any mod requires the player kit and I think the system pack. Union is the better alternative here as it includes the Gothic 2 fix, the player kit, and System Pack 2.0.

Also, some Gothic mods require Ninja to run correctly.

There are also some mods out there that allow you to just play NotR and use the classic rules for training, which is always 1 for 1.

Good luck, and enjoy. Gothic is awesome!

ADDED: BTW, I would say if it's those insane increases in training costs that you don't like (as many, many, many folks don't), it is worth it to play with a mod because the add-on is very well done, and playing with the pirates and the bandits is fun, especially in how well they incorporated it into the main story. Also, too, the Claw of Beliar is a fun weapon to run around and use, trust me on that. And you can only get that by playing NotR and defeating Raven.

ADDED: Also, sorry I don't have a link so you can take this with a grain of salt, but I know I read somewhere that if you contact THQ Nordic and prove you own the game at gog, they will send you a link to download the classic version. Again, I'm sure I read that somewhere, but I'm NOT sure it's actually true as I never tried.

"The only place you can still get Gothic II Classic from is actually GoG. Or used to be, at least.
You would ask GoG support for the Gothic II Classic offline installer, and, if you actually owned a copy of Gothic II Gold Edition on GoG, they then would provide you with a link you could download a 2GB offline installer (setup_gothic_2_gold_edition.exe) from.
The major downside being that it's the international version (v1.32), with the sometimes hilariously, but most of the times horrendously terribad English localisation."

Just recently started playing and I already encountered a weird thing that I can only assume is caused by the expansion:

A merchant in the first town says the paladins confiscated nearly all weapons and the best you can get is like a short sword. Yet, every single merchant I have encountered, even before entering the first town, had seemingly end-game weapons available for sale already. Stuff with 100+ stat requirements (I've seen a 145 Strength, 145 damage weapon offered) and prices in the 1K+ gold range. Quite immersion breaking to say the least.

I assume this was not the case in classic Gothic 2, as there is even a specific dialogue about it.

Stuff like this is pretty much always bound to happen when an expansion is stitched into the original game. That's why I vastly prefer separate/standalones...
