is this mod worth it and should it be installed before first playthrough or after?

Thanks to anyone with some more info:)
I haven't played the mod but i am familiar with it from the old Worldofgothic forums.

The mod is good, add a lot of new content and brings a lot of Gothic 2 mechanics to Gothic 1.

My recommendation is to play the vanilla game and the try it with mods.

What I mean is that I don't want to play through the game to go over the same to get the new stuff from the mod so can I play vanilla install the mod and then play on with the new stuff or do I start the game with the mod?

Every Gothic-Mod uses it's own set of savegames. They are not compatible. You can not mod a game in the mid of a playthrough.

But come on. Gothic ist one of those games that can be playe over and over again. So play the vanilla game first.

Some mods add some content or adventures without disrupting the vanilla feel. If thats the case with this one I would like to have the extra adventures in my play through otherwise I might never get to them ;)

I've finally finished playing through this mod and to be honest, i had a number of problems with it. First of all, it is pretty buggy. While i didn't encounter anything I couldn't overcome, it was pretty hard sometimes. The mod is polish made, and the English version isn't as prioritized apparently. I had to use cheats on a number of occasions because the game wouldn't let me continue. It also crashes fairly often, so you'll need to be patient to play it. It adds a substantial amount of new content. About 3 or 4 new factions, big or small, new quests, a big new storyline, and all. This all seemed well and good when I started playing it, but after a while i was left with the feeling of just wanting to get the game over and done with, which i'm glad i now have done. The game adds alot of new content but it also brings with you a whole lot of frustrations and if you start it, be prepared for that.

If I wanted to play Gothic 1 for the first time, i'd go either vanilla or with the Golden Mod.
Thanks L_brgm, good to know:) +1

I haven't played Dark Mysteries yet but I have to say that Gothic 1 is more or less story driven. The story gives purpose and context for leveling and such. Talking to NPC's is one of my favorite things to do because dialogue, as well as voice acting, contributes to the style and uniqueness of Gothic 1.
Now as far as I know, the Dark Mysteries mod doesn't have English voice acting to go along with it (which makes sense because it wasn't created by the original voice actors, but by a Polish creator). I almost feel that escaping from the original game and getting distracted with the Dark Mysteries modification BEFORE your first play-through may keep you from enjoying what others have liked about Gothic 1, exactly what the developers and publishers released back in 2000.
Although looking forward, I may not be so keen to pass a play-through of the Dark Mysteries mod AFTER the first or second play through [I say second because I recommend playing as a Templar, Mage or Guard (I love the crossbow)]. Graphics for the games time were damn good and have aged pretty well (1st time played was spring 2012 and graphics never shy'd me away! :P ).
The question is: Is Gothic the game that wins the gratification from being modded, or can a mod the size of Dark Mysteries disrupt the original entertainment elements of the game and prevent a player from ever experiencing them?
