I own Gothic 1 on Steam and for me it's nearly unplayable. It crashes trying to play sounds that it's played before, menus are cut off, occasionally the the fullscreen borderless window gains a border and whole host of other issues. I'm to the point where (if the GOG version isn't "fixed") I'm close to just watching a full playthrough of it and moving on to Gothic 2 (which I own here).

So with that said, I know that there are some basic differences between GOG and Steam versions on Gothic 3 (as I own and have played it on both), so I thought I'd see if it's the case with Gothic 1 too. Are the menus (such as the goods menu) cut off, does it crash when changing resolutions and does it crash when trying to play certain sounds (such as storm sounds) that it has played correctly in the past? For anybody that owns it on both, is the GOG version more stable in general?

Thanks in advance!

NoNewTaleToTell: ...
Read disclaimer below. But from what I heard about different versions of G1 (on various Gothic forums), the GOG version is the best and the Steam is the worst. This applies to both G1 and G2. I've read a LOT of complaints about Steam version, some complaints about local CD versions, a few complaints about original CD version, but (almost) no complaints about the GOG version. Interpret that as you want.

That would be a shame. Really. :/

DISCLAIMER: I don't own G1 here (yet). All the info is based on other people's experience.
I don't know what Steam has done to their Gothic 1 version, but even at best it's an old game with some technical...foibles, I would call them...that need to be worked out so it'll play nice on newer systems. I have a boxed CD version, and I had to fiddle with it quite a bit to get smooth operation when I first installed it.

From my experience, it's worth the effort to make it work. It's an outstanding game and you'll appreciate Gothic 2 a lot more if you play Gothic 1 first.

My advice: don't give up.
Thank you both for your answers! I think I'll just go ahead and pick it up here instead of continuing to tinker with the Steam version.
Interesting how I see complaints about old games not running on modern computers, when I almost never had any problems running them.
When I say "almost", I mean that I had a few problems with oldies "bought" on Steam, like Disciples 2 or Star Wars: KOTOR.

I have all three Gothic games (except FG) here on GOG and all of them run smooth and by the numbers, with no problems whatsoever with widescreen or higher resolutions.
Install and play.

Should you have any problems though, please post back here, and at least I will help you anyway I can.

Gothic is an amazing game and definitely a must-buy for any cRPG player out there.

Cheers.

I don't know why anybody would rent from "Steam" - they knowingly sell games that are not compatible with their system and do not warn about it. Often, one has to rename the folders to by pass steam to get the games to work.

Thank you very much! Despite the technical issues I've had with it, I've enjoyed the time I've spent so far in Gothic 1, graphically it might've aged a bit and the controls take some getting used to but as a whole it just feels "right".

Yeah, I definitely had a great time playing Gothic 1 for the first time. Your assessment is spot on.

The controls are funny - they work just fine once you get used to them, but they're sort of non-standard compared to what everyone has become accustomed to these days.
