I upped this recently. I was wondering if I should even be doing this at all; should I be sticking to the plot rails a bit more before trying all this?

Also, any tips by veteran players are welcome. Cheers.

Not sure what the question is but the stab: by late game, a person who played relatively little like myself, was able to take on multiple Orcs easily built as a warrior and I don't parry as it require reaching across the board with a third hand and hoping I hit the right key.
Feel free to take on enemies as soon as you feel you are strong enough; you won't break anything by doing so. Enemies that are attached to quests can be killed before getting the quest or simply won't appear until you have the quest. The dragons are an exception; you can't defeat them until you advance far enough in the main quest.

Thanks, buddy. I'll keep that all in mind. I was worrying that I wasn't supposed to clear that area out that early on.
