My bad I forgot to say system. :{
Weirdly, the game was launching fine for me yesterday, then suddenly I today (without making any changes at all) I started getting the same problem.
Running the executable directly from the /Gothic/System directory didn't work, but right-clicking the GoG-created shortcut and selecting 'Run As Administrator' (I'm running under Vista, SP1) launches the game and it plays fine. Regular left-double-clicking the same shortcut does nothing.
Hopefully this will help - anything I can do to help narrow down the problem, GoGgites, just let me know.
I've got XP. I went through Program Files, but always through a windows system. When you guys describe a directory, I always picture a text-based thing, like something you would get using "Run". I'll try the run as Admin thing as soon as I figure out where the password is. It's running under owners name right now.
(The Gothic.exe we're talking about is in:
"C://Program Files/GOG.com/Gothic/system")
This is the route that I used. Maybe I should reinstall... I wonder If a lot of people are getting this, They haven't gotten back to me on support yet. Phanboy do you have XP or Vista?

Directory and folder are the same thing. Have you tried redownloading Gothic? I read in another thread that the installer has been updated. And do try that Run as Adminstrator thing Pardoz mentioned, that might very well do it.

Thanks Phan, that answers my question about directories. I still have to find admin password, have been opening under owner. I probably will try again monday and will post my success or lack-thereof. Thanks for the help.
I downloaded, installed and played it without problems.
Just uninstalled Gothic, re-downloaded the GOG installer, and installed again. Startup worked fine this time, although that may be because of leftover registry entries or something.
But do try re-downloading and installing.
Well, still no luck. I reinstalled, but didn't work. Trying to get rid of GOG wrap now so I can reinstall that, but won't let me. Support hasn't contacted me about any of this yet. Might wait a week and then start new thread titled "Gothic doesn't work on XP" to get some response. I looked at that installer thread but it looked like the fixes were for different games. Oh well.
The one thing I haven't been able to try is the run as Admin thing.
Ok, got rid of GOG wrap too, reinstalled, went through program directory, no luck. The only thing haven't tried is opening as admin, but I can't remember where we put the info when we bought this PC, so that may be out. Anyway, thanks everyone for the help, and if anyone has a new way, I'd be happy to try it

By "got rid of GOG wrap too" I hope you mean that you uinstalled Gothic from the Add/Remove programs menu, not just deleted the file.

Yes, I've used it, it shouldn't make any difference, though. Let us know if the administrator thing works.

'Run as' has 2 options; run as current user, which we have set as the "owner", and run as the following user (fill in blank and password). Do you type in "Administrator", and then whatever your password is or is the original owner the admin?
