Hey all.

I haven't played Gothic 2 in almost 7 years. after deciding to play it again and downloading it from GOG i am finding playing it very difficult overall with the tweaks to the game that the expansion i hadn't heard of until recently has brung to the table. Trying to relearn the game after all this time is proving hard and this increased difficulty is making it very fraustrating.

So my question is, are there any patches or methods of tuning down the difficulty a bit without removing the new content the expansion brings?

The Hop mod should do it. It's on World of Gothic.

It might make a few bosses even harder but it more than makes up by making leveling faster and easier. Start with a bow and DEX and you'll have very little problem for most of the game.

Thanks for the reply! You mentioned Dex/bow. Is that an easier combo to play the first time through? I was str/one handed before. Never tried bows.

Bows are the easiest at the start because they have good damage and you don't have to melee with weak armor. Also with high (at least 120) DEX, you can pickpocket anyone for good XP and loot. I find the best character to be a Bow/mage with high DEX. For only 23 LP you can get the first two magic circles, summon goblin skeleton (great for killing trolls) and ice lance (great for killing fire lizards and general back-up)
With 160 DEX you can get the best bow and take on anything.

edit: another nice thing about bows is that they always hit for full damage; your skill affects the range you can hit but not the damage. In melee, a normal hit is only 10% (or min 5) damage and you need high skill to get critical hits for full damage.

Alright, thanks for the help! I think i'll try this before i fold and get a difficulty mod.

Btw, am i right in saying as an archer i'm better off going merc? (I recall something about merc's being better for ranged stuff) dunno how much truth is in that.

It doesn't really matter that much; any character can go DEX. Paladin would be better because you eventually get a few decent spells and lose nothing much. As I said above, I usually go Mage for the early spells that help greatly in the expansion area in chapter 2.
I have played Merc once but the lack of spells makes it less desirable to me.
