I usually play old games on my xp partition, and i never had any problem in the past with older ati cards but i can't use the adaptive anti-aliasing feature with the 4850 for the hell of me.

Is there a specific reason as to why it doesn't work ?

Most likely because they are old DX8 games, and simply not compatible with transparency AA. After reading your post I tried it myself (ATI 4670) in gothic 1, MSAA works but not adaptive.

It's just a fact that adaptive AA doesn't always work, depending on how the game's graphics engine is designed. It seems to work with most DX9 games.
