To people buying this game and having codec packs installed, you may have problems running the game, but this can be fixed.
It just hangs when starting and you hear about 1 second of audio of the first video.
I did a little search on my own, and found FFDshow video decoder is the culprit.
You must add Gorky17 to its exception list for it to run.
- Run your ffdshow video decoder configuration
- Look for "DirectShow control" on the left menu
- Check the box named "don't use ffdshow in"
- Click on the "Edit" button in front of it
- Click the "add" button and browse to the gorky17.exe in your game folder.
- Apply all changes and enjoy the game ! :D
This applies to the latest ffdshow, dunno how to do for older versions.
Thank you! This solved my problem :)
Fantastic.
Just bought this and sat watching a black screen thinking is anything going to happen!
No idea on how you sussed that out, but I'm very grateful!
Now I only need to work out why the ingame graphics are all corrupted :)
Thank you. Mods should mark this as a solution :)
Happy that it helped you :D
Thanks!
I thought I had wasted money.
Thanks!

Maybe it will wind up as a support article??
That was exactly my problem! that and the silly DEP on vista, but that's an easy fix too.
Where exactly in the game folder do you find the gorky17.exe? Also for FoolalooF, what is the DEP thing you are talking about with vista?

It should be in main game folder you installed it in (mine is D:\GOG.com\Gorky17\). There are three other folders (AVI, DAT & SAVEGAME) in it, the manual, unistaller, game icon etc. in there as well.
DEP is Data Execution Prevention security feature on Vista.
