heres my problem.. I've tried this with both goblins and cannot get the sword from the chest.

I used the starfish on the chest... it opens, but the goblins will not get the sword when I click on the statute to make them jump up. the anime that I get is both goblins look like they are trying to open up the chest every time.

It sounds like a matter with good timing.
Have Fingus waiting on platform and Winkle using Starfish. When chest completely opens (animation stops) only then click on statue to jump. Doing it earlier will cause the goblin not registering the chest is open and possibly is the issue you're having.
