The system requirements for Linux list 'Gnome desktop environment running on top of X11 windowing system'.

I can understand not working on Wayland, but does it actually need Gnome? Will xfce or KDE not work?

im running it on wayland with kde. It is linked against some of the libs GTK provides:
- libgdk_pixbuf-2.0.so.0
- libgdk-x11-2.0.so.0
- libgio-2.0.so.0
- libglib-2.0.so.0
- libgmodule-2.0.so.0
- libgobject-2.0.so.0
- libgtk-x11-2.0.so.0
- libharfbuzz.so.0

xfce should work out of the box. For KDE there is a high chance that an program designed for GTK is already installed.
