I have played this game before. Truly, I have. However, the What lies over the cuckoo's nest episode won't end for me. I'm on my fifth try. The Dr's soul is taken by the Darkling and he hits the floor. The insane patients run around in their straight jackets and won't leave. Everyone else is gone. The Darkling is free. What have I forgotten to do?

you need to scare away everybody that can be scared away. basically everybody that is not insane. that includes the professor i believe.

I thought maybe you haven't deactivated the pentagon force field around the Darkling. That won't happen until all the psych ward patients are out of their cells, including the sleeping man Bruce Elm. I used a sandman to make him sleepwalk out. Apparently you can also use the Possess power to access Bruce's area (and it might require Black Crow in particular).
