I can't seem to really find anything on this. I like the animated covers you can use in Steam and was wondering if/when this was something that anyone has heard is coming to GOG. Livens up the lists just a wee bit!

Thanks!
the issue is that Galaxy sits in the background while your system is running the games... every little bit counts mate

from a code point of view, yes its easy to do

I'd like to +1 this and add that GOG Galaxy seems to even support animated covers (animated pngs at least) right now.
It seems like they are just intentionally not allowed. So I feel like it should be easy to officially support them. I'm basing this on the fact that if you add an animated custom cover to a game (by choosing "All files" in the file select), it goes through and works perfectly fine. It's just that the client detects it a second or two later and replaces it with the default image and shows an error about how adding it "failed".
