My father used to be a translator, and he hated. Even though it payed well, he could go for long periods of time without a job and he would start worrying whether something would come up or not.
Yeah, that's why I hope to get an online venture up and running within the next 2 years or so. Although luckily we currently have a client that provides a stable flow of work, they are dead stingy with payments and we seriously don't like depending on them as they way too fickle and way too whiny.
We've even had them phone up to complain about a translation once, in which they ranted for half an hour on how crap it was, only to realise afterwards that they sent it to a different translator. They never did actually appologise to us.

I'm finisihg my four year media studies, so I will probably be a nice unemployed soon.

plc programing "expert" . I specialize in siemens simatic 7, but i am able to look on simatic 5, now i am trying to get friendly with rockwells allan-bradley prologix 5000 (its like going to hunt deer with artilery), i was working with amit system, V2000 system, graduated on assembler 51, been working with GAL processors, so in the end i can work with nearly any automation technology

@ Moonfear: Cool, I am currently working a little with the Siemens Simantic. I have a Master's within the field of automation and control systems by the way. Although it's getting to be more and more software-based these days and not relying so much on PLCs anymore, I doubt PLCs are due to disappear anytime soon. Anyway, it is good to feel useful in a financial crisis, there's no shortage of jobs for automation / control systems engineers and technicians. :)

Spent two years at college learning to become a electrition, then the financial crisis came along and now theres no apprenteships out there. Now im working 6 days a week in a petrol station. moneys decent but the hours and people i work with are not the best, better than being on the dole though :P

I did a BA Degree in Games Art and Design and then moved onto a Masters in Digital Arts, which I will complete this coming August. Since 2003 I've been working in a small independent Games and Hobby shop as a deputy manager, though I've recently taken up the position as a Graduate Teaching Assistant at the University I attend. I'm hoping to get a permanent teaching position there, but I have to complete my MA first.
I'm an artist at heart more than anything, so I generally speaking I always have my own projects on the go. I just work at things which feel the least like 'work' and teaching about video game design is something I love anyway.

I work with software that manages mine productivity, dabbling in sales, consulting, and lots and lots of document writing.
Basically we do a lot on the software side of PLCs and other control systems like stonebro was talking about above... and yeah, I can't see them going away any time soon.
I guess it's not until dollars become a problem that people start really worrying about efficiency and optimal operating conditions. Even though everybody says they have no money, I'm busier now than I have been for 18 months...

Registered professional engineer (civil engineering) specializing in structures. Currently working as a structural engineer. I get to design buildings, everything from houses up to multi-story. As you might imagine, its a little slow right now!

I'm a software developer by trade. My company (well, not my company, but the one I work at) makes Customer Relations Management software for the telecommunications industry.
In my spare time I spend a lot of time on computers as well. I mess about a bit with raytracing occasionally, and play a lot of games. I'm admin in a relaxed Danish gaming community, where we meet online every 6 days to shoot each other to pieces in various ways.
Oh, and I read books by the truckload as well. Mostly sci-fi.
