Vitek: It was too easy and too restrictive but it's hopefully only because of demo.
Take a look here. Mentioned before (a lot) that it is mostly a benchmark to see if you can run it. The demo is 2 (out of 4) missions of the tutorial, and it is also on the easiest level of difficulty, while previous X-COM players so far seem to be going for classic (if not impossible) difficulty. But yes, if one waited for the demo to decide if he buys or not, then the answer would be no.

The demo is set on the easiest difficulty hack your ini to impossible and try it again ;)
It's barely a demo. IMO, it's better executed than the original X-COM. I tried the original game back in 1998 or 1999 after someone had told me it's similar to Jagged Alliance, (which I had really enjoyed,) but I hated it. I enjoyed the demo of this new reboot/remake/re-imagining, so it's a good sign.

Just re-tried the demo with a difficulty setting of 2 in the .ini. I got my entire squad killed in short order by the floaters in the second mission. Definitely makes the demo more interesting.

Edit: Using the modded files in the post that JMich linked made things even more fun/horrible. :)

I enjoyed the demo even on its easy setting. Gonna try the more difficult ones later.

So far it looks promising, more dynamic, modern, but still not completely without that X-COM feel as I was fearing, I like it.
Played the demo, not really persuaded by it. Are there going to be more fire modes like in the original, aimed, burst etc? What's engineering for, do we get to manufacture our own weapons and armour? Will there be a market to buy and sell stuff like in the original? I noticed when I promoted the soldier in the demo, he automatically gets a rocket launcher, tell me that that is a demo thingy, will the actual game require you to equip all the soldiers by yourself provided you have the weapon in the first place?

The demo is the first 2 of 4 tutorial missions where gear etc is preselected for you you apparently get much more control after the tutorials...
Played through the demo twice today on Steam and I have mixed feeling. While the game is very polished and much simpler for the user, it is a little concerning at times. I'm not exactly a fan of the structure the demo seems to imply the game will have with you having to choose one battle and leave the others behind. I always enjoyed Enemy Unknown because of it's more open design that allowed you to have many bases and multiple carriers going out to battle. I do like the simplified movement system though. It is nice to not have to do the math on whether you will be able to shoot or not every time you make a move.

I guess I should've expected it to not be as free reign as the original was but I'll still pick the game up and have some fun with it. It won't replace the original but it will be a fun experience.
For people who want to see more of both the base (and some explanation of stuff) and also a different battle here are two videos I watched earlier today which I thought were really good at explaining a ton of the stuff I still had questions about after the demo.

Yeah, the game seems very much too oversimplified comparing to the original (judging only by playing the demo) but as wodmarach says above, there will propably be some more freedom after completion of all tutorial missions.

I miss the AP, I always liked to do the math when planing movement and additional actions. At lest they left the movement grid, whis is nice and retro and makes things looks right.

Fortunately, the game is made using Unreal Engine 3 so it's will be higly modable and maybe there are some gifted moders that will make a mod with the original X-COM content which would be beyond awesome.

One of the things that I find interesting about how I perceive newer games (like this for example) versus other people is that I really like that the computer is doing the calculations for me, all under the hood and such. I am currently playing my first pen and paper game with some friends and I'm having a blast and really enjoy doing all the calculations out there and messing up, and then going back, and rolling dice, and all that. But when I'm playing a computer game I feel like I don't want to have to think about that stuff as much. I want the computer to do a lot more of the work for me so that I can think more about the images and what I'm seeing than the math and numbers behind the game.

Well, an editor for the demo is already out. Did you want to see what Cyberdisks would do to your squad? How about seeing what laser or plasma weapons can do?
Edit: Removed the armor (since I think it's not changeable with this), added the weapon possibilities.

I gave it a shot, good graphics options let you run it on older machines. It even ran adequately on my 2009 apple notebook (innards like a 2008 laptop) that I downloaded it with.

The extra confirmation windows for actions only show up when you rely on the general 'do stuff' button (spacebar/enter). Direct shortcuts seem to cut right past the confirmation/info window for actions (ie: Pressing R just reloads, no confirmation). Feels like it could be a great UI once you memorise the command shortcuts.

Not a huge fan of the fonts, its a small thing but the right fonts have a huge impact (for me).

For some bloody reason the camera doesn't focus on the active unit. Half ass-ing the second mission, I moved the wrong squad member a couple of times.

It demonstrates the graphics and the UI, but not much of the gameplay.

Biggest issue raised... what kind of choice was China vs USA when the reward is 200 credits against 4 scientists? I really hope the decisions aren't one level deep. If I pick China this time for the measly 200, maybe the next time around they offer a better reward than the USA?

armour is there except the climbing one which doesn't work in the demo

You start the game with only 300 credits iirc 200 credits is a rather large payout
