StingingVelvet: You have big marketable properties with built-in name recognition. You want to do something with them, but turn-based strategy games do not work or sell on a console. Hence you turn them into FPS games which (people say) work on consoles.

klaymen: So then why use the old series' name instead of coming up with a new one? That way you can have FPS game which can be inspired by anything without bastardizing any other franchise, however dead it may be.

Lenny: I agree, I'm a big fan of ravensoft in general. But I don't see the point of shoehorning XCOM into a sci-fi shooter when even a great one like singularity really didn't do so well.
Singularity didn't do well because while it was a decent FPS it was going into a market flooded with decent FPS games. That's why publishers are now making FPS games with marketable names in the hope the name will be enough for it to stand out in the flooded market. It's a short-sighted money grab but that's what publishers excell at, making short-sighted money grabs.

X-COM's name is known mostly to older gamers, so "hurr, lets's make another FPS" may not be universal rule of success.
At least we have Frozen Synapse :D
