If you just purchased a motherboard from Newegg, and a relatively new one at that since it's the Z87 (4th Gen Intel), and before you even opened up the package just delivered from Newegg you look at their site and see that said motherboard has been "Discontinued".

I feel worried. Should I be? Would you be?

(This is the motherboard for building my nephew's machine)

Personally I wouldn't be, but that's because it's impossible to keep up with all the new stuff. As long as it does what you need it to do, I wouldn't worry about it.

I read the reviews before I purchased it and they were all very good.

It just seems odd to discontinue a brand new board so quickly. I mean the Z87 boards didn't come out until very recently.

I dunno, I'm worried MSI discovered something that caused them to discontinue it.
Is it discontinued or just unavailable? If the latter, it may just be a case where they can't get new stock in right away, possibly due to demand/popularity.

But no, I wouldn't be worried either way.
Stuff changes fast nowadays, don't worry.

Precisely, you rarely know when something is going to be discontinued, especially if it's just a part like a motherboard.

They might have discontinued it for any number of reasons, including shifting to a slightly different model with an added or removed chip on the board. Or, they might have had to substitute a chip because it's no longer being produced.

But, it doesn't likely have anything to do with reliability, that would have come out in the reviews. Chances are that the last boards leaving the factory are the most reliable anyways.
Ok, thanks folks.

Got me feeling better.

Gonna build this kid's machine on Monday.

Thanks again for settling me down.

Oh, there was one other issue I wanted to ask about.

I need to find a link to the cooler though, be back in a few.

You worry too much ;) Even if your board dies the warranty states that you will get the same board, an equivalent or your money back.
I don't know how many folks here remember helping me with my very first build last year, but one of the issues I ran into was the Cooler Master 212 CPU cooler I got wouldn't fit on top of the CPU with the fan in front and blowing to the rear because the memory slots were too close. So, what I did was put the fan on the back, and had it "pull" air toward the back rather the blow it. And it's been fine and dandy. Haven't had a single heat issue yet.

However, I looked and found this same cooler was available for the new LGA 1150 so I purchased it, but now, looking at the motherboard I swear the EXACT SAME THING is going to happen here.

WTF? Do some motherboards place their memory slots a little different from the 115x boards or something (mine was an 1155 board, this one is an 1150)???

I can't believe this cooler would be so popular if this problem came up on every motherboard, so I'm guessing it must just be the newer 1155 and 1150??? And why would it say it's compatible with the 1150 yet it seems obvious to me that if I install it with the fan in front, blowing toward the back, that it's going to bump up against that memory slot, just like it did in mine. Do folks that use this cooler just go with two memory sticks??? I guess that's one option, but we've already ordered his memory and it's in four sticks.

But that cooler with the fan in front is not going to fit between the memory sticks and CPU with it located on the front and blowing to the back. I guess I'll have to do the same thing for his machine.

Just makes me wonder why this cooler is so popular.

ADDED IN EDIT: Well, now I'm not so sure. I just looked at it again and it looks like maybe it will fit, albeit barely. But it most certainly wouldn't in my motherboard. It wasn't even all that close, the fan simply wouldn't fit between the memory stick and cpu heatsink. But I may have jumped to conclusions on this board. I just looked again and now I'm thinking this one might work. It certainly has more room between them than my 1155 board.

Oh well, either way I suppose it will work ok. It has on mine so far.

Yours may have been one of the last in stock and has probably been replaced with a newer model.

OldFatGuy: *cooler thing*
Mine is a 1155 board (an ASRock P8P67 Pro3) with four RAM slots and my cooler (the slightly behemothic Noctua NH-U12P-S2) hovers over the RAM stick just fine, although the distance between the CPU plate and the bottom of the heatsink is three millimetres higher on the Noctua than on the 212. It's a tight fit - you can't remove the RAM stick without getting the cooler out of the way first - but I'm guessing that those three millimetres make the difference here.

Anyway, I remember you posting pretty impressive temperature readings on your PC back in the day, so it shouldn't be a problem.
Doesnt this just mean its discontinued at this store only? Stuff changes, but not this fast.

Not likely, it probably means that the manufacturer is no longer producing them. So, there might be other stores that still have a few, but the store that the OP bought from would have no right to commandeer those units to serve as replacements.

And yes, things do change that fast. Or, more to the point, the appearance changes that fast. The units are probably discontinued for a bit, prior to consumers noticing the lack of supply. I mean, it does take a while for the units to ship, and I think wholesalers tend to buy directly from the manufacturer.
both internet outlet I used shopping from still list it. One indicates that it will be resupplied on 3rd July, the other as "out of stock, but available from the supplier, indicative delay 7-10 days"

So I guess it sells pretty well and they need to restock it

Or they changed the packaging, some accessories or it's just the end of a discount, and the new packaging comes with a different part reference nr
