Not sure how a different developer got the IL-2 Sturmovik name, but this isn't quite a sequel to IL-2: 1946, already offered here on GOG.
For that-a true sequel, in the spiritual "by the original developers" sense-you'll have to wait for Storm of War: Battle of Britain.
(Sounds kind of like the whole deal with Operation Flashpoint, don't you think?)

taczillabr: Yeah, at the moment I saw that this game wasn't by oleg maddox I knew that it wasn't the real IL-2 2.
Anyway, looks an ok game, I would buy it for when I'm not in the mood for the hardcore sims.

Ok, look guys. I can't stop you from spending you're money so, if you're going to pick this up, at least wait till you can find a used copy. I bought it brand new for my PS3 and beat it in just a few hours (really got my money's worth on this one, huh?). And, as far as MP goes, meh.
If you want a decent arcade flyer, there are much better choices out there. If you haven't played em yet, definitely check out the Blazing Angel games. You might also want to give Tom Clancy's H.A.W.X. a look (MP is pretty good here too).
Happy flying. :)
Oh, and if you want a taste of flying the un-friendly skies over England circa 1940 and can't wait till Storm of War comes out, hop over to Matrix Games and grab ya a copy of Battle of Britain 2: Wings of Victory.
To date, this is simply THE finest BoB sim I've ever played!
Beware however: don't go by the system requirements listed. Even the "recomended specs" are way to low to run this sim in all it's glory (literally hundreds of aircraft on screen at a time! Sweeeeet).

I'll wait for more reviews, but pretty sure I'm picking it up eventually. 34.99 seems like a steep price though if the game is on the short side. I don't mind a short main campaign if there are plenty of other gameplay options (CoD:MW2 can be finished in 6 hours on the first playthrough, but it does have Spec-Ops and good MP on the side).
$34.99? Try $59.95 for the PS3 version! WE WUZ ROBBED!!!
Oh well. Like they say, buyer beware. I saw IL-2 on the box and said "SWEET! MINE!".
Got conned like I'm sure a lot of other people did. :(

1C owns the franchise, and they published this on consoles.

And Maddox WAS involved in this. Not sure to what degree, but the devs drop his name, so he has to have at least watched a powerpoint presentation :p
As for the realism: I haven't tried on the higher realisms yet, so that is mostly word of mouth, but it does look like it becomes much more IL-2-ish at that point.

OK, thanks for the recommendations. I'm not that updated regarding the recent games, but I'll browse matrix games to see what they got. I'm looking for some true RTS games too. ;)
I don't buy games at full price. So, IF I buy this game, it will be on a sale for the pc version and after they remove the activations limit.

Talking about sims, what is your opinion on Rise of Flight? Any more WW1 games worth playing?

Valve generally don't mention 3rd party DRM until a week or so after release.

michaelleung: Gaijin Entertainment? Seriously? That's their company's name?

That's probably down to their love of anime. They are the one's responsible for X-Blades after all.

I bought Rise of Flight practicaly the second it came out. Simply put, there is no other WW1 flight sim currently on the market (and there ain't many) that can even touch this! In fact, not many modern jet combat sims come close to the level of detail and realism modeled here. I don't want to do a whole page review here so I'll just touch on the best (and not so best) aspects.
THE GOOD:
As I've said before, I'm an actual pilot and, while I've never flown an actual WW1 fighter, I have flown a Stearman biplane so I know how they would have behaved. Believe me when I I say the flight model here is just superb. Eeerily realistic.
Damage modeling is just as amazing. A couple of bullet holes through the fabric of your wings and you will instantly notice how differently your "kite" handles. Nice.
Graphics aren't too shabby either. Aircraft are modeled in exquisite (almost photo-realistic) detail. Effects such as lighting, weather and explosions are stunning.
RoF offers full TrackIR support and it actually works very well.
THE BAD:
Only two aircraft are available to fly out of the box: the Spad XIII and the Fokker D.VII (two others, the Albatros D.5 and the Nieuport 28 have since been added via free download). More are promised in the future but you'll have to pay 7 bucks a pop to download em.
This sim is about as "hard core" as it gets and, as such, is VERY unforgiving. It was desigmed by pilots for pilots and, while many settings are somewhat scalable, beginning simers and arcade "gamers" should probably keep their distance. You guys weren't even an after thought here.
This sim has an incredibly annoying "Steam type" authentication scheme which requires you to be logged in every time you boot the sim up! On the one hand, I totally get why. This is a small design house trying to protect their property. Understandable. On the other hand, I've experienced numerous connection problems that have cost me many a fight. PAIN IN THE ASS!!
Finally (and this is a big one for me), there is no adjustment for joystick sensitivity. Pulling off intricate maneuver sets practicaly requires the finesse of a neurosurgeon! Yanking on the stick too much is a quick way to make yourself dead. They've promised to change this in an upcoming patch. Hope so.
There are a few other bugs and glitches that I won't bother getting into as they are all minor stuff and will probably be fixed in the (hopfully) soon to be released patch.
I see I've gone on much longer that I intended so just let me say this: if you're looking for a sim that both perfectly and beautifully conveys the realism and authenticity of WW1 air combat, you just can't do any better than Rise of Flight.

Apparently, the DRM used is not Starforce but "FrontLine ProActive DRM".
Now, whether that's just the rebranded name for Starforce, is up to you to decide:

It's just the fancy name for one of the many versions StarForce uses these days.

Thank you for the long review, Sir. Appreciate it.
I'll buy it online, and I'll probably get Battle of Britain 2: Wings of Victory too. :)
