What is so new about that metro monstrosity? It looks just as horrible and pointless as the Windows 8.0 version.

HereForTheBeer: That's one thing I do as the installer is running: rename the manual to something other than "manual", plus eliminate the underscores, and dump a copy in my Manuals folder.

Psst, GOG: put real names on the manuals at your end of things. Some games are good to go and others are, well, just "manual".
That is one of my biggest pet peeves, the damn underscores, I know it is a throw back to old operating systems, but why do people still use them? It is irritating as hell to remove them. I also have to capitalize some of my files...and for programs, put the version number on the end. However, I don't like the version number on my game installers. Also, do I really need the file to say setup in the filename, kinda self-explanatory.

^this, that's pretty much how it looks on mine.

What you're seeing isn't a GOG installation weakness, it's a windows 8 metro interface weakness.

Buy yourself a copy of Start8 or get one of the free versions and never ever look back.
windows 9 will be a good one, this chart does not lie

DyNaer: To the OP.

ok ; first i'm not using win8 & never touched it (when i saw the screenshots friom the consumer preview i didn't wanted to touch it the silly approach) -> so don't jump to my throat :P

i'm not really suprised about this problem. The start screen is much more oriented for tablets than desktop.

i'm not sure this issue is gog related or windows related ..

Lots of the games here works under win8 (that's the gamecards mentions).

You can't ask to GOG to fix the issue based on preview of win 8.1 -> even if i agree if this more likely a Service Pack.

If Microsoft introduced some changes, i don't think it's raisonable to ask GOG to fix the issue you have based on the preview. And furthermore ; Microsoft will probably add some more changes & could cancel some others; between now & the final release.

Now , gog probably works now / or in the recent future to this problem.
I definitely am not jumping down your throat, but I do think that GOG would like to be aware of changes MS is making.

However, it looks like they already know this. I just installed NWN2, and noticed that it had its own folder, completely obviating my issue. It appears it's just older installs that have this issue for the moment.

So never mind, GOG is already aware of this, and is updating their installers to be even better than I recommended. I just haven't reinstalled my older games.

well, since there's some lovers & haters ; and some people would jump in my throat , because i didn't tried this OS. But the only fact to not letting the user choice for the desktop uses -> so i boycott this OS. ...

Back to your problem :

if Neverwinter Nights 2 doesn't cause this problem ; this could be something else

Neverwinter Nights 2 Installer is older than others games you have installed (wicther 2 for example). Unless you used some old installer for some games.

However; they could be aware of the problem , i'm agree with you

While GOG should certainly name things better sometimes I think this is a "Windows 8 aspect you are using is shit" issue.

He had to "forget" about Windows 2000 ti make it work, though.

No argument from me. I generally like Windows 8, and the updates to 8.1, but that definitely could use some refinement.
I didn't even know Windows 8 did this since I don't really show all programs much anymore. When I'm looking for something I just type out the name. And I keep all my game desktop icons in a "My Games" folder like I did with Win7.

Did this happen with base Win8 or is it an issues solely with 8.1?

EDIT: Or, since I'm on Windows 8, I could just look myself.
It seems like it kind of happens?
Mostly with the older GOG installers. New ones have their own sections.

dr.zli: You have a right to do a downgrade and put windows 7 on your machine. Just sayin'

Tychoxi: You mean an upgrade to Windows 7.

Judging from the square icons, I think you have the old installers (version 1.0). The new ones (2.0) should create a separate group for each game on WIndows 8 and 8.1 as well.

You can check that on free Tyrian 2000 for example. If it will still look like that, please let me know.
+1 for the OP for at least trying to help out GOG and fellow users.

And yes, Windows 8 is in all likelihood shit, but we all know thousands will have it foisted upon them at some point in the future....
I would also appreciate clear filenames in the startmenu and program folders. I use the search function of the startmenu to start and search programs and it's sad you don't get out of the box the exact manual you search for. It's really not important to update all installers because of it, but it would be really nice if it could be done for new releases and by the side while the normal updates.

Edit: Also I copy my manuals to a seperate folder to sync with my tablet, to not rename the files everytime would be also helpful here. So yes, clear filenames please ;-)

Doesn't look much better than before. Guess I'll be sticking with Classic Shell's start menu, which has been working very well for me so far, although I hardly ever use it to start my games or open manuals. *shrug*

Yah, I was behind the power curve. I just installed NWN2 and it had its own program group. So thanks for being on top of things, you already solved my concern. :)
