LordKuruku: The more popular nickname is "Grinches on Parade", though it's considered tired and cliche. Saying it will make both the left and right moan and facepalm.

Stay the fuck away from politics. There are a lot of older people who take sides in politics, in case you haven't noticed. Involving yourself in politics is a waste of time and a waste of life, and you can keep wasting both until the end of your days, for so very little.


Left, right, 3rd parties, I'd argue it's all there to keep us at odds with each other. I'd say it's working, too. Some wealthy dick far removed from reality is always in charge, and everyone but a select few of the representing party usually isn't too pleased. My friend voted for Obama, I voted for nobody. I don't give a shit about McCain, nor Obama, and I'm very sure they don't even know I exist, though I'd say that's a very good thing.

He regrets voting for Obama, even though he'd never have voted for McCain. In the end, it hardly matters as we get the best of both worlds anyway, seeing as he's senator and all...

Eventually people get fed up enough and revolt. The only problem is that historically the next regime is usually extremist.

Mostly there is some variations of people. Those who believe and die and vice versa. that was two. Then we have people which are normal and try to mostly live in peace. and those who gladly die thinking that it was my destiny. Few personas remain.
I haven't seen wall-E.

cogadh: Honestly, an attitude like that is exactly why it's always some "wealthy dick far removed from reality" who gets elected. They count on voter apathy like that because otherwise, they know they'd never get elected.

There are third parties who might better represent you. Sure they don't have a real chance of being elected (at least to president, but congress is not out of the question and they often win local elections) and votes for them show whoever DOES get elected that there is some demand for the 3rd party's policies, and thus is an indirect method of influencing things.

Also I'd argue voting for a 'joke' candidate (like mickey mouse or yourself or whatever) is better then not voting - it at least shows you care and dislike all the choices rather then just saying 'oh whatever, I truly don't care what happens to my country'

Tulivu: I am watching the GOP debate on CNN and they are discussing gay marriage. I come from a conservative background but am personally more libertarian/a little right of center. The only conservatives I vote for are fiscal state sovereignty centered (ie. not Bush) who will let people live as they vote. While there are three who say "leave it to the state" most say they would change the constitution to ban a lifestyle. WHAT? I often defend the reasonable religious and conservative types but these guys are setting me back a few decades.

The funny thing is that the 3 decent sounding GOPs I'm looking at are black, female, and Ron Paul.

I'm sure this thread will make me look like an ass in the end (pun) but am I the only one who is disappointed? Preemptive strike: GOP's are religious bigots, thanks for contributing. Tea baggers are racists, uh huh. Cling to your guns and religion, thank you, come back soon.
Yep, you pretty much put your finger on what is wrong with politics in North America (US and Canada).

You have political parties that make a big bundle bag of policies.

You might agree with some policies in the bag of party A and then some other policies in the bag of party B, but unfortunately, you don't vote for policies, you vote for the party (technically, you vote for an MP, but you know those guys will stick to party lines 99% of the time so really, you are voting for the party) and you gotta take the good and the bad that comes in the bag of whichever party you vote for.

In a way, elections are really the democratic appointment of who will be dictator for the next 4 years.

That is the awesome state of our politics today.

And some fools think we can teach people in the Middle East or China about democracy?

We don't have anything to teach to anyone, we are failing at democracy 101 and badly.

Except that if the other party controls either or both houses of Congress then nothing happens, rather than tons and tons of things happening.

I have to say though, for all the problems with US politics, at least I sort of understand it. If I ever got fed up badly enough with the US to emigrate somewhere I'd have to learn a whole new political system, and that would probably just make my brain explode.

I think you should take a greater interest in the political system of other countries.

You might get a glimpse at some of the things they are getting right that your country isn't.

It can be a real eye opener.

Yep, but nobody really cares, if someone really cares or not. All that counts is solely who's got the power and the money in the end. It's nice to know if somebody dislikes the choices, but it hardly matters. Just change the choices and the electorical system, because you can't change the choices if you don't change the voting towards a more proportional, multi party parliament.
