orcishgamer: Because for me, they are the opposite of fun. Just like Scrabble, playing that takes some serious teeth gritting. I get some people like them, and I dearly hope you always have access to them, but I don't find them fun. That level of "realism" is like a kick in the nuts for me.

I suspect these are more niche now, like wargames, but hopefully, like wargames, they will see continued development.

Elmofongo: Am I the only one who enjoys realism in games these days.

Call me a heritic, but I love how "Realistic" GTA 4 was in terms of driving and physics.

and I am getting tired of the "Games are made to be fun" rhetoric, why can't we have both or more.
I think we can have all kinds of games, I merely said I don't find this kind of game fun. It's not fun vs. realism, it's the kind of realism they focus on in those games, it's horribly tedious and unpleasant for me. I know some people like them and therefor I hope they keep getting made. But it's just not something I enjoy. I daresay there's probably a few genres that you wouldn't really lose any sleep over if you never had to play an example of again.

I don't think you're some kind of heretic or anything. You simply like a genre that I (and apparently many) don't like. You still seem to have some people who love it just as much as you, celebrate that fact and keep enjoying it.

I'm not even stating a preference for BF3, I don't really like that either. There are a ton of games that I do like and genres in which I will play even the mediocre or slightly bad entries... just not this one, sorry:)

In my recent experiance with Battlefield 3, I realize on the multiplayer-side, the game actually tactical if I play with gamers who are willing to play like a team.

Well, that's always the case, right? Team based games are really fun with a cohesive team, which can happen in a PUG, but is far less likely.

Solo queuing in League of Legends gets brutally bad as well, it's fine as long as you're winning, start to do a little badly and watch your team break down. People stop covering for one another, spend more time name calling than playing smart, and rip on new people instead of advising them how to do something better.

I do like having teams for these games, need more IRL friends that also like this, imo, so we can have game night one night a week and drinks another.

End of off topic:)
Arma?

orcishgamer I forget to mention one last thing I know it might end with the same answer but I still want to ask:

Why is it that racing simulators like Gran Turismo and Forza and mabye certain Need for Speed games and realistic sports games like Madden, Fifa, and MLB the Show can get away with realistic gameplay, but not Military shooters?

realistic shooters = easy dying and frustrating gameplay. Realistic sports is not realistic as you do not need to actually be an athlete to play them.
I love and still play Tactical Shooters
I like how in games like RS3 you can choose to play it with pre set waypoints for your teams or you can choose to set your own making it good for any kind of players
they need a come back
I loved Rainbow Six back in the day, but like many, I wouldn't stand dying so easily and having to repeat the whole mission so many times nowadays. Unless the game had a very generous checkpoint system, but that would kill the whole purpose of a realistic shooter in the first place. Well, at least a rainbow-six like one. ArmA is fine with some checkpoints, but it uses a very different structure where planning isn't that important.

I'll be honest, I actually don't know, because I don't like most of those either, HOWEVER, if I had to hazard a guess it would be that the reasons people play those games is entirely different from why people play shooters (as a general genre), and that the reasons most (not all) people tend to play shooters are better fulfilled by a BF3 fantasy than a slog through ARMA (as they see it).

And for Gran Turismo, I know at least one race car driver (who also instructs) that hates the whole concept, he says you need the g-force feedback in your gut as feedback from the vehicle, without that those games tend to give you feedback about the time the tires start squealing, which is too late in real life driving. As described to me by him, I can't promise it's accurate, I can tell you the dude has scared me shitless driving me around in his daily driver Porsche.

Gran Turismo, Forza and Need for Speed Shift aren't considered realistic by grognards, try Grand Prix Legends, rFactor, Richard Burns Rally or iRacing. ;)
I still love those games though even if they aren't full sim, they compensate that with good visuals, sound, lots of cars and a lot of customization options.

As for the sports games, FIFA is similar in gameplay as a soccergame, of which the name I can't remember, I played on arcade machines during the eighties.

But as for realistic shooters, the early Delta Force and RB 6 games, which were then consisdered realictic, were also much more accesible and easier to get into than a game as ARMA for example. I notice by myself that although I find it an interesting concept, I can't bring myself to it to learn all the stuff cause I already had to learn lots of stuff for flight and racingsimulators, which I rather play. I think that this cause those markets to get more fragmented also.

Hey look, leaked gameplay footage of Battlefield 4 and it looks like Real life (no it's not)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rLHU-_OhT8g&feature=g-logo-xit

I could not help it I was going in youtube and I saw this vid in the features, but goodness why is this getting so many views even though there are similar videos already that came before?

Apperantly the internet plays way to much Call of Duty.

I mean no disrespect to the soldier in the video.

amok: realistic shooters = easy dying and frustrating gameplay.
Actually, I have found the unrealistic shooters to be the hardest and most frustrating (and fun) by far, e.g. Sin and Punishment, Ikaruga, Contra, R-Type, etc.
I like them. I just suck at them. After proving it time and again, I no longer buy entries in a genre where I can and do die in the first level. Same with Stealth. Same with Danmaku shooters.

Ok, ok. I'm gonna install Hidden and Dangerous 2, only 2WW tactical shooter.

And than ignore TF 2 and come back in RO2. It's time.

"Only" WWII tactical shooter? Deadly Dozen and Brothers in Arms don't count?
