The only MMO's I've played long-term are the 2 Everquests and Rift. I'd say they all make fine choices. I don't currently play any and haven't for 2 years but still can offer an opinion.

Everquest is quite dated now. And you will be so far behind the masses that while it will initially be amazing, it will soon feel like work as there is a bit of a learning curve to it. But during its hey day, it was so much fun. Before games started to hand-hold and lead you to wherever you needed to go. Mind you, I'm completely fine with hand holding these days but back then, before the market was saturated with mmo's, we didn't know any better and it was the most amazing game out there.

Everquest 2 meets your criteria and is still the best mmo I've played. Paladins, rogues, fighters, clerics, necromancers and then some classes are available to you. Elves, dwarves, gnomes, humans and then some races are available. Each race has its own starting area from icy snowlands, to wooded tree huts to islands to evil foggy lands and what have you. Each new character you start will have its own quests and gear and skills that no 2 will feel the same for at least the first 20-40 levels. So much to do. So much to explore. So many quests. There's also mercenaries you can hire in town to help you in dungeons or quests/adventuring in general if you can't find a group. Oh, and crafting - from woodworking, weaponsmithing, armorcraft, carpentry, spellcraft, alchemy. 9 professions in total I believe. Crafters have their own questlines too. Oh, and player housing in this game is by far the best in any game bar none. I keep remembering all that this game offers and its a shame it never got the kind of fan base that WOW has.
Free to play has some restricitons. I'm not up to date on all of what you're limited by but there are some races, some classes, high level spells and fabled weapons I believe. You can subscribe to have access to it all or pay piecemeal to have access to certain things as needed. I believe inventory and what you can carry is also limited in free to play but every mmo has that restriction as its the most coveted.
Read up on it a little and see if its for you but I really don't think you can go wrong with it. Restrictions on most all free to play games are similar so you shouldn't have to make a decision solely on that factor.
If you choose this, and do get into it, play on Antonia Bayle server (PVE and roleplay friendly) as that's the one I played on and I can probably re-install it one day and provide you with money/gear and the like if you get attached to it. AB also is/was the most populated server and was very newbie friendly at one time. But with an aged game, might not be what it used to be (ie roleplay was already kind of being phased out and rp'ers often got mocked/bullied the more popular the server got - probably still be some rp exclusive guilds though if you're into that).
To me, EQ 2 also had the best and most customizable user interface. You can put windows/hotbars/anything wherever you want to in the UI.

I played Rift for about 7-8 months and enjoyed it for the most part but I was getting tired of mmo's about this time so when my last 3 month subscription expired, I quit and haven't looked back. This one probably has the least F2P restrictions. Might even be the most newbie and solo friendly but it has gone thru so many changes and updates since I stopped playing that I can't give you a better description of it. With it having gone F2P most recently, I imagine the lower levels are abuzz with activity again so that should help. The Rift thread on this forum should also help as I've skimmed it every now and then to see whats going on in that game.

Hope this wall of text was legible and gave you some better insight on the games I've played. Good luck choosing :).

Thunderstone: second this. The first game is like this as well
Yes, I personally prefer the first one to the second. Just a shame that there aren't a lot of people playing the first one anymore.
THAT'S MY PURSE!

I DON'T KNOW YOU!

It's not free or a MMORPG (just an MORPG) but maybe Dark Souls is worth a look.

You can complete the game without having to play with other people. And if you do play with other people it's designed more around anonymous drop in and out play than setting up big organized things.

If you need help against a boss in pve or want to pvp, you just look for a person's sign on the ground and summon them. If you want to be summoned by someone, you set down your own sign. If you don't want to mess around with pvp or invasions, you can just stay undead when you die.

Though it does take a fair amount of skill/effort to get anywhere in it so I don't think it's all that casual to play, and since I played it on consoles I couldn't tell you about the Games for Windows Live crap involved.

In general I think it would be a bit better to try more of a MORPG to get used to online play before diving completely into a MMORPG ecosystem. Or something like one of these mining games where I guess you can just set up a private server and play with a select group of people and just mess around doing whatever.

I'm not really much of a multiplayer person either.
Why would you want to do that?
You will end up all sweaty, and dirty. Muddling with strange people who could give you things.
You just end up feeling things you wont want to, and in the end you can never go back to how you were.
Do not rush this, make sure it is with one you have a real connection with.

That or just sell out to EVE online.

xxxIndyxxx: I really enjoyed age of conan when it came out. It's free to play now...
I really enjoyed the *IDEA* of Age of Conan, and I even enjoyed character creation, and the implementation. Everything looked so promising, and it was visually stunning game. I actually bought the collectors edition when it came out.

But there was one thing that was a total buzzkill for me with AoC. The other freakin players all acted they were ADD tween boys! You could NOT get away from people talking about freaking BOOBIES...I swear every chat channel, every place I went, people running around topless and yelling about their "BEWBS".

Don't get me wrong, I'm certainly not a prude, and I like boobs a great deal actually. But that...it was insulting, and I just cant handle that much concentrated stoopid in one place.

Should they ever actually ENFORCE an age limit, I'd love to try it again and see if the game lived up to its potential...
Thanks for all of the replies so far. I am going to research the following suggestions further and choose one:

Earthland Realms
Age of Conan
Neverwinter
Dragon Nest
LoR Online
World of Tanks (It's true....Licurg has yet to steer me wrong)
Star Wars the Old Republic
D & D Online
Guild Wars 2
Lineage 2
EQ2
Rift (Yes, teshra, the wall of text actually was helpful)
Dark Souls
EVE Online

As 011284mm pointed out, this is an important step. I want to be ready and make sure that my partner is special. But I think I'm old enough to handle it. Plus, all of the other kids are doing it so why shouldn't I?
Glad somebody liked my threads! :-)
Hey I'm ABSOLUTELY NO EXPERTS helping you chosing the right MMO but if you stumble upon STAR WARS The Old Republic (its free to play by the way) I willing to lend a hand and join up with you.
Two newbies fail more spectacular than one. ;-)
Homer,

Thanks for the shoutout on page one. For a new-to-mmo's experience I'd recommend either Neverwinter (very solo friendly and doesn't require a lot of time investment per session) or Rift (very solo-friendly but more group-focused - however, group-focused in a way where people come and go as needed) - Rift is very permissive with its free options, and so is Neverwinter.

I'd recommend Lord of the Rings Online if you want to see a virtual representation of Middle Earth and want a classy community, but it requires more time typically per session than Rift or Neverwinter. imho it has the best community I've found online since pre-WoW (A server to try if you try lotro is Vilya - very good people there)

There's tons and tons of options, but those are my three suggestions for sword and sorcery-type mmo's. Each one is going to give you a different experience and impression, so keep that in mind as you research.

Age of Conan is really fun, but I don't recommend it for an mmo virgin. It's brutal, and if you pick a PvP (Player versus Player) server you WILL get ganked a lot (ganked = killed repeatedly by kids who prove their epeen ((e-penis)) by killing lower lvl players).

Personally I'd start with something not too heavy and move onto AoC if you enjoy the first one. Star Wars: The Old Republic is a great game for what it does, but you're talking a 30+ gig download when you're not even sure you will like the genre yet.

I've been around a lot of mmo's but I'm certainly no "expert" - hope this helps a little bit :)
Has anyone recommended Defiance to you? From what you describe I wonder if that may be up your alley (the sci-fi setting aside), as the reviews/first impressions I've read seem to make it out to be an MMO for people who usually don't play MMOs.

I am disappoint..
I'm not an mmo vet by any means only having played some in 2-3 week doses but reading thru this thread I had some questions. Hope you don't mind me asking and maybe they'll help you too Homer.

1. Defiance, isn't that mostly PVP?

2. LotR -played this for a short while but not having a fast mount really made travelling a pain. And those Turbine bucks or whatever they're called, isn't that what you need to do things w/o paying? Grinding for them was not fun. Other thing about this but for the few weeks I played, I hardly ever saw another player and when I did, they were way higher level passing thru.

3. I think DnD Online was the same since its also Turbine. Although, I did enjoy this one a lot but got to a point where I couldn't do much w/o groups and they were hard to find for a new player. I did like the leveling system.

4. WoW - for something so popular, I've never played it but heard its super solo-able but the community is awful with a capital A. This is still subscription only right?

5. Everquest - SONY botches something in this game every other month right? They certainly don't have a good enough reputation. Lot of complaints too when this went freeplay if I remember.

6. Eve - I've heard this is hard to break into as a new player if you have no friends in the game. Also, isn't this pvp-centric? And its not freeplay yet and still sub based or has that changed?

7. Rift - most everything I heard about this game has been good. Trion has a good rep too unlike most mmo devs. I played it in beta and liked it a lot. Couldn't afford a sub then so didn't get it when it went live. Actually, one thing I've heard about it thats not so good is this is not the same game it was in beta and its more like WoW now. Thats made me not jump on the freeplay bandwagon. And the dynamic events sound awesome and play awesome at first but you quickly find they're all practically the same and it becomes tedious especially if the enemy takes over a quest hub and you are alone. Has that changed?

8. SW:TOR - played this in beta too and it was so.....meh, for lack of a better word. Nothing really stood out about this and word of mouth was pretty brutal on this one. How has it actually improved?

9, NWN - I tried this when it launched recently but for the life of me I can't remember a single thing about it.

10. Signed up for Elder Scrolls Online beta and I heard they've invited people but I'm still waiting atm.

Apologies if my sort of "hijack" bothered anyone. But this is a good topic for those interested in picking up an mmo so thought I could add to it here instead of a new thread.

I've also played Fallen Earth and The Secret World. TSW was $5 back in December and everytime it goes on sale now, I kick myself for not buying it since its never been that cheap again. If I could recommend one, that would be it even though it doesn't meet many of your criteria. The story was fascinating, the skill system was unique, the puzzles/quests were VERY well done and didn't feel like a grind.

Hm.... I'm going to go out on a limb and say Shin Megami Tensei Online. It's entirely free, and partying with other people is entirely optional. As an alternative, you can recruit "demons" to fight and grow stronger alongside you. It is an MMOJRPG though, so I have no idea how you'd feel about that.
