Qwertyman: Since Dungeon Hack was brought up in this thread, I'd like to hijack it with this:
Okay so, I missed out on a lot of the old first person view dungeon crawlers from back in the day. Here's what I'm looking for: Does anyone off the top of their head (yeah right), have a list of all the dungeon crawlers like Dungeon Hack that do not use a 3D engine? I want to play some of the old ones but
only the ones that use a frame-by-frame system. The problem with old games, and the reason I can't go back and play games like Might and Magic, is that the old 3D graphics really ruins it for me. I know that graphics don't make a game, but when a game is designed to be immersive (i.e. using a real-time first-person 3D game engine), then graphics play a large role, at least for me.
As you can see, I played Castle of the Winds, so I clearly don't care about graphics in the general sense. I played Wolfenstein 3d, The Doom games, Duke 3d, etc., all when they were relevant. But as much as I loved them, I can't really go back and play them for more then 5 minutes as a little nostalgic trip. I can however handle any old isometric RPGs, or dungeon crawlers that are frame-by-frame (screen-by-screen?), so I'd like to get a list of all of those types of dungeon crawlers (including ones available on GoG) so I can check 'em out.
Just to clarify in case my point was missed: I'm interested in first-person dungeon crawlers that use a frame-by-frame movement system, and
not a real-time movement first-person 3d engine. Hopefully that makes sense.
Thanks in advance!
I know what you mean, I think the sort of games you're looking for are Mordor.
It's probably one of the best of the genre. I remember playing it back in the late '90s. The pay version is quite expensive though at $20, There is a shareware version that you should be able to find.
I'm too lazy to check, but I thought that Stonekeep is also a frame by frame deal. I could be wrong about that as I haven't bothered to install it yet.
EDIT: Apparently Mordor is DRM free on Gamersgate for $10. I guess when I think about i, $20 for a physical box edition isn't that bad.
