I was a kid when I played this old game on my 386. I know I bought it from Radio Shack. It was one of those bargain games that came on a single floppy disk. I know it was not from a large publisher. It was an RPG game that automatically generated levels in the dungeon. It had very simple graphics. Definitely 2D. I wonder if anyone else remembers its name. I've gotten nostalgic lately and would love to find it.

I know its a big ask, but maybe there is someone else out there that remembers it.
Was it Dungeon Hack by SSI?
Can you explain the type of graphics a little bit better? Were they like ASCII graphics, or just simple 2D? Was it a rogue-like RPG? (Wasn't Dungeon hack an ASCII rogue-like?)

I remember a real simple RPG that I had back in the 386 days called Castle of the Winds, I believe. It was a very basic game graphically, though I can't recall if it had randomly generated dungeons or not.

Nethack was the freebie ASCII roguelike :D
Do you remember anything about the controls? Mouse driven, some keys, or tons of keys? There's a whole family of RPGs with procedurally generated dungeons that's already been mentioned (roguelikes). They typically had quite convoluted controls.

I don't think it was randomly generated - the gardens were always to the East anyway, with the fountain in the North section of the garden. I still have this somewhere! :)
I think Dungeon Hack was the only SSI AD&D game I never played

Nope, not 3d. It was displayed as a dungeon map with an overhead view.

Heh, lucky guess.

I still have both #1 and #2 on a backup drive. I think it's legal to download them for free, now.

Since Dungeon Hack was brought up in this thread, I'd like to hijack it with this:

Okay so, I missed out on a lot of the old first person view dungeon crawlers from back in the day. Here's what I'm looking for: Does anyone off the top of their head (yeah right), have a list of all the dungeon crawlers like Dungeon Hack that do not use a 3D engine? I want to play some of the old ones but only the ones that use a frame-by-frame system. The problem with old games, and the reason I can't go back and play games like Might and Magic, is that the old 3D graphics really ruins it for me. I know that graphics don't make a game, but when a game is designed to be immersive (i.e. using a real-time first-person 3D game engine), then graphics play a large role, at least for me.

As you can see, I played Castle of the Winds, so I clearly don't care about graphics in the general sense. I played Wolfenstein 3d, The Doom games, Duke 3d, etc., all when they were relevant. But as much as I loved them, I can't really go back and play them for more then 5 minutes as a little nostalgic trip. I can however handle any old isometric RPGs, or dungeon crawlers that are frame-by-frame (screen-by-screen?), so I'd like to get a list of all of those types of dungeon crawlers (including ones available on GoG) so I can check 'em out.

Just to clarify in case my point was missed: I'm interested in first-person dungeon crawlers that use a frame-by-frame movement system, and not a real-time movement first-person 3d engine. Hopefully that makes sense.

Thanks in advance!

I know what you mean, I think the sort of games you're looking for are Mordor.
http://www.decklinsdomain.net/orders/Mordor-Original.htm

It's probably one of the best of the genre. I remember playing it back in the late '90s. The pay version is quite expensive though at $20, There is a shareware version that you should be able to find.

I'm too lazy to check, but I thought that Stonekeep is also a frame by frame deal. I could be wrong about that as I haven't bothered to install it yet.

EDIT: Apparently Mordor is DRM free on Gamersgate for $10. I guess when I think about i, $20 for a physical box edition isn't that bad.
